Meet the team from Cockburn Libraries!
Next from your library team is Annabelle.
I grew up in China and have been in Perth for ten years. The town where I grew up didn’t have any public libraries at that time. But that didn’t stop me from reading. I would ride for an hour to the only bookshop in the town to buy some books when I had enough pocket money. I still remember the joy inside my heart while I was riding to the bookshop, heading to a paradise full of amazement. My family couldn’t afford many books that time, but my parents always encouraged me to read and supported me in their own way. I remembered when I was helping my parents at the market where they had a stall, when it’s not busy I would go to the bookstall to buy one book. Then I would hide at the back of the stall, reading voraciously. I could finish one book in a couple of hours which my father was always happy to see. To encourage me, he would take the book back to the book stall and ask the owner that he wanted to swap for another book, so I could read two books by paying one……
I think books help people to see the world and learn about the world. I like non-fiction especially biography, because you can learn different cultures and histories about a far, far away place, somewhere you might never have chance to go. You can also have the chance to experience the life that different author was living through reading (without taking any responsibilities).
I’m a library officer, my regular work includes shelving, desk shift, manage flyers and displays, stationary order, manage LOTE books and Newmarket Life Stories.
When and why did you begin working in a library? I’ve been working in a cafe for quite a few years. When my daughter started school, I brought her to the local library almost every day. We both love reading and one day, I was just thinking maybe I can have a job here in future. So, I went to talk to the library staff and then started the course at TAFE. After two years study, I got this opportunity to work at Success Library.
Favourite thing about working in a library? My favourite thing about working in a library is that I have the opportunity to read the new books before most people!
A book you recommend? My favourite book this year (I know it’s only March): Mud pies and other recipes by Marjorie Winslow. It reminded me the old times when I played with my cousins all day to cook with leaves, sand, rocks, sticks……So much fun! I would be crazy if I got this book that time.
Your favourite place to relax and read? I set up a reading corner for myself at home.

FUN FACTS!
Working in a library doesn’t mean the staff can sit down and read books when they are working. I got this question all the time. And your library is not just about books. We have so many things happening every day in the library. Come and check it out!
