At the Foot of the Cherry Tree is a historical fiction novel inspired by a true story of Australia’s first Japanese war bride permitted into Australia. This is the real-life story reimagined by Gordan and Cherry’s granddaughter, Alli Parker.

Set against the backdrop of Hiroshima, World War II and its aftermath, the story follows Nobuko ‘Cherry’ a sixteen-year-old Japanese girl, and Gordon, an eighteen-year-old Australian boy, as they navigate the complexities of their love in a world fraught with prejudice and political tension. Their relationship begins during a time of deep mistrust between their nations, yet their bond grows stronger through shared resilience and an unwavering belief in each other.

This story spans seven years and two countries which are reeling from the aftermath of war. Many forces were against the lovers such as the “White Australia” Policy, bureaucracy and social acceptance
If you’re a fan of historical fiction that touches the soul, “At the Foot of the Cherry Tree” offers a beautifully crafted tale of love and resilience. It will tug at every emotion you have and have you shouting at the book for a life that was meant to be.
