Tall/short, full/empty, same/different. What could they possibly be??? ……. OPPPOSITES!!!!!
Do you love Opposites?? In my primary school, my English teacher would shout a word and we had to answer the opposite of it. It would start easy and then gradually move on to tricky words. It was a great game to get us into learning new words and their meanings.
Did you know? The opposite of indefatigable is not defatigable but rather fatigable. The opposite of incline is disinclined.
Opposites are also called antonyms. Learning opposite helps to understand, describe and compare things and concepts and hence develops communication. It can help children improve their vocabulary. It helps with sorting and categorising. Activities, games and picture books are the best ways to introduce Opposites to your little ones.
Big or Small, Opposites are fun!!!!
In this post, we are going to show you a few books about opposites with some rhymes and a craft that you can share with your tot.
Books
Better Beginnings Read Aloud Books. Here is the blue sheep, and here is the red sheep. Here is the bath sheep, and here is the bed sheep. But where is the green sheep? Mem Fox and Judy Horacek take you on a wildly wonderful adventure in their rollicking search for the green sheep. 3-6 yrs.
One of my favourite story time picture books written by Australian author Mem Fox. It’s a popular book among parents and children. The book is filled with eye-catching illustrations. The story highlights concepts like opposites, colours and rhymes. It’s a delightful read- aloud book highly recommended for all children.
POP-UP & LIFT-THE-FLAP BOOKS. Turn the pages, lift the flaps and see animals of all shapes and sizes bring to life the world of opposites. From slow snail to fast cheetah, heavy hippo to light butterfly, smooth frog to prickly porcupine, Petr Horacek’s pop-up animals encourage early literacy, language and communication. With its fun illustrations and interactive pages — learning has never been so much fun! Ages 0+
Animal Opposites is a bright, bold and colourful book about opposites. It has fun pop-up animals and lift the flap pages. Having only two words per page makes it easy to get kids listening to you. The best surprise comes at the very last page. I think this book is perfect for toddlers, babies and pre-schoolers.
PICTURE BOOKS. Little Penguin goes to visit his friend, and the journey involves lots of opposites over and under, high and low, and of course up and down. Each spread features a unique flap that illustrates the opposites and makes reading this story an interactive experience. Ages 0+
Up and down is a cute story about the adventure of Little Penguin making the journey to his friend. It is easy to read as the sentences are short. This book features lift-the-flaps. I found the title interesting. I think this book is perfect to introduce the concept of opposites. This book is suitable for pre-schoolers.
