Timeless / Kelly Canby

This book was part of the Notable list for the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year Awards – Picture Book

Emit (whose parents turned back time to name him) is surrounded by busyness. Dad is too busy to read stories, Mum is too busy to play games and Emit’s brother and sister are simply too busy doing nothing to do anything, at all. Emit tries everything he can think of to get more time, he tries to catch it, wait for it, but it’s not until Emit tries to buy some time that he learns the secret which is, if you want time, you have to make it.

Timeless by Kelly Canby is a story that will delight any child. The simple yet powerful text tells a story that will resonate with children and the adults in their lives. Timeless is heart-warming and incredibly clever.

Emit, whose name is time spelt backwards, is trying to find a way to find more time. His parents and siblings are always busy: so busy they have no time for Emit. They are caught up in the busyness of their lives.

“Time Flies! Maybe that was the answer?…….”

He remembers ‘time flies’ and tries to capture it with his net, but to no avail. He has been told that ‘time passes you by’ and so seeks it out without success. He has been told that ‘time is precious’ so checks out the museum, art galleries and banks.

This beautiful book is filled with vibrant, bright, and beautiful illustrations. The illustrations are stunning, capturing the frantic way that Emit’s parents and siblings spend their time. Readers will recognise some of the ways in which their own families use their time. This is a very cleverly written picture book that weaves idioms about time into a strong narrative. It’s a gorgeous tale that’s playful, innovative and timely
