November is LGBTQ Pride month in Western Australia.
Pride celebrates the achievements, social recognition and legal rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people.
While different states and countries celebrate Pride at different times of the year, June is often recognised as the international commemoration month of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, an important moment in modern LGBTQ history. Since that time, the movement for “gay liberation” spread throughout most of the Western world and has gradually become more of a celebration than a radical protest movement.
PrideFEST is held in WA in November with many events to reflect the visibility, resilience, and unity of the LGBTIQA+ community. The theme this year is We Are Here, carrying a message of solidarity and reminding those who are struggling or facing isolation that they are supported, while calling on allies and institutions to actively uplift and protect queer individuals.
