National Reconciliation Week is held every year from 27 May to 3 June.

These dates commemorate two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum which was a resounding success for Aboriginal recognition as Australian citizens, and the High Court Mabo decision which recognised First Nations people’s land rights.

In 2001, Reconciliation Australia was established to provide national leadership on reconciliation. In the same year, approximately 300,000 people walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of National Reconciliation Week to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights.

Today, National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in many workplaces, schools, community organisations and groups, and by individuals Australia-wide.

“We know we cannot live in the past but the past lives in us.”
Charles Perkins OAM, renowned activist and first Aboriginal man to graduate from a university in Australia (1966)

The National Reconciliation Week 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

After the failure of the Voice referendum, at a time when Australia faces uncertainty in its reconciliation journey, this theme calls on all Australians to step forward together. The history of reconciliation is not a linear one but includes both great strides and disappointing setbacks.

This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together.
