The CBCA judges say…
An enticing invitation opens this vibrant picture book, as a vivacious young child confidently demonstrates their gymnastic prowess, bouncing, cartwheeling and flipping their way across the pages. Their dog, a silent but invested observer throughout, provides a lovely contrast. This book conveys so much energy and life which children will connect with immediately. The young child’s voice permeates the tight, joyful rhyming text which includes a rich assortment of verbs, nouns and adjectives. Pencil, ink, crayon, gouache, and digital illustrations are filled with zoom in action and movement matching the equally energetic text. The endpapers are perfect bookends, as twirling ribbons, held in the child’s left at the start and right hand at the end, appear to capture the story.
Gynmastica Fantastica! is a delightful picture book that captures the boundless energy and unique charm of childhood. The story follows a young child eager to showcase their newly acquired gymnastic skills, performing with unbridled enthusiasm in front of a loyal, shaggy dog. This charming duo adds a heartwarming touch to the story, making it a celebration of individuality and the beauty of imperfection.
The text is written with a vibrant use of alliteration and rhyme, making it a joy to read aloud. The rhythmic language not only engages young readers but also enhances the playful tone of the book. Each page feels alive with the child’s excitement, and the presence of the shaggy dog adds an extra layer of warmth and companionship, emphasising the supportive and loving environment in which the child’s self-expression flourishes.
