This year is so strange, it’s the first time since I started at Cockburn that I haven’t done a Christmas Storytime…Emily will be with all of the Success Storytime peeps on Friday 9 December and I’m going to miss it like crazy.

There are heaps of Christmas events coming this month, and I’ll be getting into Christmas with my Toddler Tales group but…no Storytime? I’ll just have to focus on this blog instead.

I love Christmas, you can tell because I have Christmas PJs that are now my night attire until Christmas (yes, I have too many pairs), I have heaps of jingly Christmas earrings, I have a DEEP love of cheesy Christmas rom-coms…give me all of the movies where people are weirdly planning the biggest Christmas event ever with just two weeks to go (yeah right) and have enough time to go for sleigh rides with the person they are going to be in love with by the end of the movie. Sorry, I got distracted there, I love Christmas books, songs, rhymes, I have multiple Christmas music playlists (did you know Bob Dylan did a Christmas album? I also have William Shatner on there), and I don’t need to wear the same Christmas top twice from now until the 25th.

I feel I’ve proved my ability to do this now so let’s get into a Christmas Storytime blog.

The Books

A Snugglepot and Cuddlepie Christmas Adventure

‘One more day.’ Snugglepot put a mark on the calendar. ‘I wish Christmas would hurry up and come.’ Christmas is coming, and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are getting everything ready. But the list of things to do is long, and Cuddlepie might be too busy to remember Snugglepot’s present! This beautiful hardback storybook includes watercolour illustrations of May Gibbs’ treasured characters, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, as they embark on their trademark mischievous adventures for Christmas. Including beloved characters, such as Mrs Kookaburra, Ragged Blossom, Mr Lizard and, of course, the wicked Mrs Snake!

Bluey: Christmas Swim

It’s Christmas Day and it’s the perfect weather for a family swim! Bartlebee is Bluey’s new toy – how will he cope with his first Heeler Christmas?

I haven’t jumped into the Bluey craze but this is a very sweet story, very familiar to Australians and reflective of our Christmases. Bluey has a new toy – one they LOVE, but other people don’t treat this toy quite the way Bluey wants and in a feeling very familiar to a child or parent who needs to reconcile this situation.

Another Book About Santa by Laura Bunting

It’s Christmas time, and all everyone wants to read is another book about Santa, right when he is at his busiest. Santa is overworked and has had enough! But can he find a festive replacement to star in all the Christmas books so he can get on with his merry-making?

That Christmas by Richard Curtis

Christmas is the same every year, isn’t it? Same food, same routine, same visiting the neighbours and going for a walk. Except for the year of That Christmas… Find out what happens when traditions are upturned, when chaos reigns, and what’s really important when people come together.

Imagine a Christmas that’s just 26% better, that’s just a little different. Imagine a Christmas where you’re 9 with all of your friends and no parents and you get to ignore all of the boring traditions. That’s what THAT CHRISTMAS was like. This is such a sweet book; I want to go the THAT CHRISTMAS too. Luckily, I’m holding Christmas this year so I might just use this book for some tips.

LEGO Merry Christmas

The people in LEGO City are getting ready for Christmas! Little LEGO fans can bring the city to life as they push, pull and slide the tabs in this fun board book. Make the LEGO bricks move lower the Christmas tree into the town square with your crane, fly a mail plane through the air and then slide the scene-changing mechanism to see who is delivering presents on Christmas Eve!

Christmas Songs

It’s wonderful to sing Christmas carols and songs but today let’s let someone else do the work…

I always try to sing this at Storytime but it’s a marathon so maybe we should listen instead.

Christmas Craft – DIY Christmas Garlands

These are a great way to DIY decorate and entertain the kids.

If you want to be even more frugal, use old printing paper that has something on the back side.

What You Need:

  • Paper
  • Drawing supplies
  • Scissors
  • Stapler

What You Do:

  1. Draw Christmas pictures. They don’t need to be good, but they can spend as long on them as they want.
  2. Cut them into strips.
  3. Staple them together into a garland.
  4. Decorate the tree with them, or anywhere else they will suit.
