The Mortal Instruments : A Review

Book Series

I was gifted the book series by a neighbour after the birth of my son as something to do while he was asleep without the noise of the TV. It soon become to a point where I didn’t want to put the book down.

The writing drew me into the setting, that I felt like I had been transported from my couch to New York. The characters sucked me in and I quickly felt like they were my family.

The books follow the story of Clary (Clarissa) Fray, who upon her 16th birthday discovers that she in fact comes from a long line of Shadowhunters, who are sworn to protect the mundane (humans) from the shadow world. The shadow world consisting of Vampires, Werewolves, Demons and what not.

She drags her best friend Simon along for the ride and together they meet other Shadowhunters (Jace, Alec and Isabelle) who become her friends and ultimately her family.

Between discovering that ‘all the stories are true’, Clay discovers her destiny and shapes her own story. Clary and her friends become heroes who write and make their own stories true.

Some days, I miss living in the Shadow World and I will pick up the books and have a re read every once and a while.

TV Series

In January 2016 a TV adaption of The Mortal Instruments to be titled Shadowhunters aired on Freeform. It stars Katherine McNamara in the lead role of Clary Fray.

It is based of the books but also throws in their own stories to keep even the book lovers surprised. The bones of the story are there, but how they get from start to finish may vary.

Although the acting was a little poor in the first half of season one, as the characters grow, so have the actors. They are more familiar with their characters and each other and therefore have a flow that has really helped the show progress.

I love the TV Series. It has been great seeing the characters and storylines I love come to life. I have also enjoyed the original content that the show runners have introduced. It hasn’t detracted from the original story lines of the books.

Lovers of the books will enjoy the TV Series, and new comers who love the genre will love the TV Series on its own merit.

However, in June 2018 Freeform cancelled the Series. It will air the second half of Season 3 (3b) and a 2 hour Finale to properly conclude the story.

There is a major Social Media Campaign to save the Series.
