The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – Young Adult Book Review

It’s been ten long years but the Hunger Games prequel, A ballad of songbirds and snakes, is finally here! If you want to re-read the original books first, Cockburn Libraries have print, audio, or electronic copies of all the Hunger Games series.

The original Hunger Games trilogy were published between 2008 and 2010 so some parts were a bit blurry in my memory. But that made no difference to my enjoyment and understanding of the book. I’ve read some negative reviews of this new book but maybe my expectations weren’t as high (I found the third book a bit average…). Other reviews raved about it’s brilliance. For me, learning Snow’s ‘origin story’ was interesting, and I both loved and hated the character. I think any reader of this series should spend the time to read the prequel and get an understanding of both how Snow came to be the man he is in the original books, and the development of the Games.

This book has a great mix of the dystopian world that we all know from the Hunger Games, plus teenage love, post-war poverty and consideration of the nature of humans.
