Our Summer Update is a bit on the late side as, with one thing or another, we haven’t had much to spruik in the ‘awesome new anime titles’ department recently. Well today’s a new day and, as far as new releases go, we finally have a few titles to share.
[FYI our Autumn Update is going have some top shelf titles, so stay tuned for that one. – Ed.]

Let’s get straight into it. Starting with a feature film that was one of the big releases of 2019. From the director of Your Name if you haven’t seen it yet, like me, I’m sure you’ve at least heard of …

Weathering With You DVD cover

Weathering with You

“The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability.”

On to two completely different, “complete” series I think you’ll enjoy. The first is a slice-of-life school comedy series who’s style can best be summed up by the phrase, ‘from the sublime to the ridiculous’. It’s sense of humour is offbeat and off the wall but I thoroughly enjoy it. Some truly laugh of loud moments of absurdity.

Nichijou - My Ordinary Life DVD cover

Nichijou : my ordinary life

“The key to friendship is stuck in a robot. Follow the outlandish adventures of three ordinary girls as they learn their most important lessons the hard way. While elsewhere in their unusual town, a pocket-sized professor makes life difficult for a robot who just wants to be normal.”

The second is a totally different kettle of fish. It got a mention way back in a 2018 update as my “what I’m watching … ”  when it was being freshly simulcast, straight from Japan.

So check out the trailer and what I had to say here ⇒

Saga of Tanya the Evil DVD cover

Saga of Tanya the Evil

“A little girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and porcelain skin fights on the front lines of a brutal war set in an alternate world. What others don’t know is that she’s a reincarnated -” Whoops! I’m going to stop the blurb right there. Major spoilers. You’ll just have to watch it!

And here’s another addition to one of those series which begs the question, “When is this thing going to end?!”

Answer: “Not today, sonny!”

One Piece. Voyage Collection 7 DVD cover

One Piece. Voyage collection 7

“Luffy and his mates emerged victorious from the battle at Enies Lobby, but after bidding a fiery farewell to the Going Merry, these pirates won’t be going anywhere! There’s a hefty new bounty on each of their heads, and their only hope for escape rests on the cyborg shoulders of Franky. The blue-haired, speedo-sporting shipwright offers to build the Straw Hats a new vessel, but time is of the essence. Some very familiar marines are breathing down their necks, and the crew can’t set sail without a boat – or their stubborn sniper.”

I’m afraid that’s it! I know, we’ve been a bit stingy. So let’s revive an old segment and answer the question no one’s asking. I’ll even make it a two-fer:

What I’m watching …

Kemono Jihen (literally translates as “Monster Incidents“)

A remote mountain village. A detective from Tokyo who specializes in the occult. A strange boy who works in the field every day instead of going to school. A series of horribly disfigured animal bodies appearing.
What could possibly go wrong …

A so far intriguing supernatural action/mystery series.

What I just finished watching …

Charlotte

Charlotte DVD cover

With great power comes great responsibility…

A strange phenomenon has begun to emerge in a very small number of young boys and girls. The onset of puberty bringing with it special, seemingly supernatural abilities. Yu Otosaka has one such ability and he uses his power to his personal advantage, to live an easy school life. Suddenly in front of Yu a girl named Nao Tomori appears and due to this meeting his, and the fate of all special power-users, will be exposed.

I honestly wasn’t expecting much but this school set supernatural sci-fi series surprised me with how well it skillfully balances its action, comedy and dramatic elements. And how well the characters change and develop over the story arc.

As mentioned, be sure to keep an eye out for our next Autumn Update. There”ll be some awesome top shelf title reveals. See you then!
