Seven new anime Series to See you through Spring
Hello again. If the watery eyes, blocked (or overflowing) noses and general unpleasantness around me is anything to go by, Spring is definitely in the air. Which means time for our next Anime Update!
We have a nice mix of film and series, new and old (well, classics which are new to us, and possibly you as well). So I’m sure there will be something for everyone.
For starters we have one of, if not the least known Studio Ghibli titles going around. Dating way back from 1999, I haven’t even seen this one myself.
“Join in the adventures of the quirky Yamada family – brilliantly presented in a unique, visually striking comic strip style. Experience the little victories in life. The Yamadas are a typical middle class Japanese family in urban Tokyo and this film shows us a variety of episodes of their lives. With tales that range from the humourous to the heartbreaking, we see this family cope with life’s little conflicts, problems and joys in their own way.”
“A powerful spirit that once threatened to destroy the world is back! Naruto’s mission is to protect a priestess name Shion, who is the only one with the power to seal away the monster. She also has the uncanny ability to predict someone’s fate. Her latest prediction: Naruto will soon die. Naruto’s only hope is to abandon Shion, but that’s not Naruto’s style. He decides to face her fatal prediction head-on, and die!”
The next two titles are series which are newer to Australia. The first is a 2020 remake of a super-famous (and super-popular) manga and anime series. The second has just had an exiting new ‘season two’ released.
“Despite the loss of her beloved mother and a string of misfortunes, Tohru Honda is always smiling. Even while living in a tent! But after learning that she’s living on land belonging to the Soma family, she receives an invitation to live with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure! Surrounded by Somas, Tohru discovers their family secret: When hugged by someone of the opposite gender, they turn into Zodiac animals!”
“Mob is an eighth grader with powerful psychic abilities who wants to be normal. When not exorcising evil spirits he attempts to suppress his powers, causing stunted emotions. But when he hits 100 percent, his pent-up feelings unleash a dark power.”
A different and quirky title, this would be my “staff pick” of the bunch and Episode 1 was a hit at our October Anime Arvo screening.
Next up is an epic Japanese feudal fairy tale. Based on the hugely successful manga of the same name (which has sold more than 50 million copies to date) and celebrating 20 years since it’s original airing:
“Kagome Higurashi, an average ninth grader, gets pulled into an ancient well by a demon, bringing her 500 years in the past to the feudal era. There she meets Inuyasha, a half-demon who seeks the Shikon Jewel to make himself a full-fledged demon. Together with her new friends Inuyasha, Shippo, Miroku, Sango and Kirara, Kagome’s search for the shards of the Sacred Jewel begins … “
Last but not least, two titles to keep some of our ongoing series up to date:
“The long-awaited return to Shiganshina has come. Once again, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin face the Titans in their hometown where the secrets of the Jaeger family cellar lie in wait. On this do-or-die mission to take back Wall Maria, the Scouts quickly learn that Reiner and Bertholdt are the least of their worries.”
“The Chunin Exams are on! Boruto has just started training under Sasuke as the exams get underway. The Leaf Genin face a number of formidable foes from the other villages, but the exams are interrupted by a blast from the past. Bad blood from Kagura’s Clan brings Naruto and Sasuke back to the battlefield!”
