What comes to mind when you think of the word silly?  Does it have negative connotations, or does it bring a smile to your face?  It can be hard for some parents (myself included) to let yourself go and be silly with our children.  We live such busy lives that we sometimes forget to have fun.  When was the last time that you had a really good laugh with your kids?

Being silly with your children can bring many benefits to your family.  A bit of humour and warmth will strengthen family bonds and make you feel connected.  Some spontaneous fun will lead to a more relaxed household.  Laughter lifts your mood and diffuses tension.  Kids that have fun and silliness within their homes are better at coping with stress, they learn to not always take life seriously.

Silliness induces laughter and a good laugh has many health benefits.  It releases endorphins that make you feel good. It decreases stress hormones and its increases your blood flow and oxygen levels.  Why wouldn’t you want to bring some silliness into your life?

Some of the easiest ways to be silly with your children include:

  • Playing outdoor games like tag or hide and seek.
  • Telling jokes.
  • Dance together (like no one is watching).
  • Have a water fight.
  • Skip in public.
  • Pretend to make the bed with them still in it.
  • Read a silly book.

THE WRONG BOOK – NICK BLAND

Poor Nicholas Ickle is just trying to tell his story, but he is continuously interrupted by characters from other stories and they just will not leave him alone.  His frustration in his attempts to get them to understand that they’re in the wrong book is palpable and hilarious.

This is a quirky and fun book with lovely illustrations.  The Wrong Book is a brilliant book to read aloud.   The louder and crazier you read the book the harder your kids will laugh.  A personal favourite.

This is a ball – Beck & Matt Stanton

This is fun book aimed at 3-6 year olds.  Much like B.J. Novak’s The Book with No Pictures, this book has to be read aloud to children for it to work.   The reader is defying the child to correct them as the words of the book and the pictures do not match up.

Kids seem to love picking up the errors of their parents (or Storytime reader) and everything that you say when reading this book is wrong.  Must be read with absolute certainty and authority to make it work.  Overall, this book is great fun and it will make your kids groan and laugh.

The Wonky Donkey – Craig Smith, Illustrated by Katz Cowley

This book is hilarious. Each page tells us something new about the donkey and the result is a cumulative rhyme about a most interesting donkey.

The more we learn about the donkey the funnier the story becomes…

A spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky honky-tonky winky wonky donkey!

See how funny it is here.

DO YOU PUT YOUR HAT

Do you put your hat on your foot, on your foot?

Your hat on your foot, uh-uh!

Do you put your hat on your knee, on your knee?

Your hat on your knee, uh-uh!

Do you put your hat on your elbow, on your elbow?

Your hat on your elbow, uh-uh!

You put your hat on, you put your hat on…

You put your hat on your head, head, head!

You put your hat on, you put your hat on…

You put your hat on your head, head, head, head!

Shake, shake, shake my sillies out

Shake, shake, shake my sillies out

And wiggle my waggles away
