There are many ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
This delightful picture book, written and illustrated by Sean Avery, tells the tale of Lou McGrew, a young monkey, who doesn’t like bananas anymore. Can you imagine eating bananas for breakfast, lunch and tea? Well Lou has had enough. He cannot eat one more banana.
Sue Hopoloo is Lou’s best friend. Sue is a rabbit who eats carrots for every meal. She can understand how Lou feels as Sue is tired of carrots for breakfast, lunch and tea. And then Sue has a brainwave – they’ll swap! Lou can have Sue’s carrots and Sue can have Lou’s bananas.
But guess what? These two best friends quickly discover that monkeys do not like carrots and rabbits definitely do not like bananas! An example of how the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side of the fence.
All Monkeys Love Bananas was released by Fremantle Press in March. It is Avery’s first children’s picture book and it was officially launched by Avery at the State Library of Western Australia on March 15. Avery has said that the story came to him while he was drawing a monkey one day. He thought it would be fun if the monkey threw a temper tantrum about having to eat bananas all the time.
The illustrations are very important to Avery as when he was a child himself he claims to have felt a deep connection with the artwork in picture books – it made him feel good that even though he could not read the words, he could understand the story by ‘reading’ the pictures. The illustrations contain a mainstay of black and white tones with splashes of colour throughout.
This is a fun, entertaining picture book that sweeps you along with its rhyming text and playful illustrations. It is a great story to read out loud. The words in the book cleverly vary in size, boldness and case to help tell the story in an engaging and appealing style.
All Monkeys Love Bananas is a humorous new addition to our “Monkeys” storytime resources, but would also be at home in our “Yummy in my Tummy” storytime kit. Pre-school children everywhere are sure to enjoy this tale of cheeky Lou and his best friend Sue. Happy reading.
