Hi everyone! This week’s Storytime blog is all about Rainy Days.

I don’t know about you, but I am well and truly over the rainy days! I am ready for some sunshine and warmth. Having said that – there are many wonderful things about rainy days: snuggling under a blanket watching a movie, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, playing board games in front of the fire or heater, splashing in puddles. What else could you do on a rainy day? Oh! I know – you could do some craft and read one of these wonderful books!

The first book I am reviewing this week is Dinosaur Thunder by Marion Dane Bauer and illustrated by Margaret Chodos-Irvine. This is a lovely and colourful story that helps children cope with the sometimes frightening noise of thunderstorms. It is bright and relatable and really focuses on things young children will understand.

The second review this week is for Rosie to the rescue by Kyle Mewburn. This book brought a big smile to my face while reading it. It is such a  cute and silly story with excellent illustrations combining photos and drawing and the writing has a beautiful rhyming flow that keeps the momentum up all the way to the end. How will they get the milk to the town when the farm is all flooded and muddy from too much rain?

The last story idea for a rainy day’s reading is Hugo the Hare’s Rainy Day by Jez Alborough. Hugo is a lovely sweet story about a hare that really wants to stay dry. Hugo does not like getting wet at all, and when the rain is pouring down, he struggles to stay dry while trying to help his friends stay dry as well. I loved the simply sweet kindness in this story. It’s a great read for a cloudy, rainy day.

Craft – Rain cloud

What do you need?

  • coloured cardboard
  • crepe paper
  • cotton wool
  • scissors and glue
  • pencils/crayons/textas

Method

Draw a cloud shape on your large piece of cardboard – spread with glue and add cotton wool for a nice fluffy cloud. Add some colourful streamers of rain and decorate with a pretty sun or some drawn on raindrops or whatever else you like!

Rhymes

Incy wincy spider

Incy wincy spider
Climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain
and washed the spider out.

Out came the sunshine
And dried up all the rain
So Incy Wincy spider
Climbed up the spout again.

It’s raining, It’s pouring

It’s raining, It’s pouring
The old man is snoring
He went to bed, and bumped his head
And couldn’t get up in the morning.
