Hi and welcome to my Pram Jam blog. This month I am going to write about numbers and counting. There are so many ways of introducing numbers into your babies life – you can start turning your favorite nursery rhymes into counting games by singing it and doing the actions. At Pram Jams one of my favourite counting rhymes is “This Little Piggy Went to Market”. Sitting on the floor with your little one facing you, point to, touch or wiggle his/her big toe while singing the first line. Move to his/her second toe for the second line, third toe for the third line, and so on. When you sing the very last line (“wee, wee, wee”) give bub a little tickle or kiss.
This little piggy went to market
This little piggy stayed home
This little piggy had roast beef
This little piggy had none
And this little piggy went
Wee, wee, wee, all the way home
Another fun way is counting animals when out walking e.g ducks at the park and you can always sing “Five Little Ducks”, which is a lovely rhyme. Building blocks with your baby is another fun way of learning to count. When you are shopping you can get them to help you count fruit. Every day we do things at home can be turned into fun counting activities like setting the table and cutting up fruit e.g the number of apple pieces on their plate.
We have lots of great, colourful board books on counting and numbers. Some of the ones I have selected are:
Numbers and counting are a part of every day life. You can make it as enjoyable as you like! I would love to hear your comments on how you make counting fun and what your favourite rhymes are.
