What do The wrong book, Roald Dahl, an Italian mouse, and LEGO have in common? The most borrowed kids’ library books of 2016.  

There were over 250,000 loans of kids’ books from Cockburn Libraries in 2016. So which books were the most popular?  The lists of the most borrowed in each of the main children’s collections at the library – children’s fiction, picture books, comics, and non fiction – have been compiled so read below to see which books the kids of Cockburn borrowed most in 2016.

The wrong book by Nick Bland is most popular picture book again. It has remained very popular after it was featured as the National Simultaneous Storytime book in 2013. In the year marking the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth, it is fitting that the top three places on the 2016  most borrowed children’s fiction list are taken up by Roald Dahl books, with The twits at #1. In the most borrowed comics stakes,  the Italian mouse, Geronimo Stilton, takes the #1 spot with The weird book machine, and on the list of the most borrowed children’s non fiction, it’s Minecraft and LEGO books at the top with first place going to LEGO play book : ideas to bring your bricks to life.  Check out the full lists below:

70 Most Popular Children’s Fiction Books of 2016

Roald Dahl takes the top three places as well as most of the rest of the Top 10 (seven books!) most borrowed children’s fiction books . Andy Griffiths is highest Not Roald Dahl author, and the highest Australian author, with his The 52-storey treehouse at #4. The first Harry Potter book and  Diary of a wimpy kid. The ugly truth, the book that has been number one for the last three years, are the only other two Not Roald Dahl books in the Top 10. Check out the whole list below:

70 Most Popular Picture Books of 2016

The Wrong Book proves again to be the right book for the pre-schoolers of Cockburn, finishing 2016 as the most borrowed picture book of the year (And just between us, it was the most borrowed book of the year overall, of all the books in Cockburn Libraries!).   Classics like The gruffalo (#2) and Where the wild things are (#4)  are always near the top of the list and everyone’s favourite anthropomorphic pig, Peppa, appears 15 times in the Top 70 list including an impressive four books in the Top 10.
