A Wrinkle in Time: family book and movie review
A few weeks ago, my son asked me to reserve the children’s sci-fi classic, A wrinkle in time by Madeleine L’Engle. By the time it arrived, we had heard about the new movie based on the book and decided to do a family comparison review!
The making of this movie and it’s importance in today’s film-making industry is discussed in this interesting Time article, with the producer dreaming of bringing the book to life on the big screen since she was a small child. The history of the book is also fascinating, with its regular inclusion on both banned and beloved books lists.
Have you read the book? Seen the movie? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
Family reviews *Spoiler alert*
11 year old son: “The book was much better because I feel the movie kind of ripped off the classic book by changing it too much. There were important parts missing and lots of extra bits added in that weren’t really needed. The planets were changed quite a lot. I found the book more interesting because it has a good story with lots of plot twists but the movie destroyed that.”
9 year old son: “I think the movie was better than the book. In the book, it didn’t really describe what the Mrs looked like but in the movie, they were really cool. My favourite part of the book was meeting the father and my favourite part in the movie was IT.”
40 year old mum: “The movie wowed me with the costumes, make-up and scenery but I did find it fairly slow in parts. The character of IT was very different to the book (with a definite ‘Stranger Things’ feel) and I was disappointed that we didn’t see Aunt Beast and the creatures of Uriel come to life on screen. The book is a fantastic introduction for kids to the wonderful world of sci-fi. The writing is clearly aimed at a young audience but even as an adult, I was drawn into the story and enjoyed the wild ride across the universe.”
