My next review of a book from the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year Notable and Short Lists is The 65-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths, with illustrations by Terry Denton. This popular book is on the notable list for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year: Younger Readers category.
My kids have read and re-read books from the Treehouse series for the past couple of years so when it was announced that Andy Griffiths would be speaking at the Perth Writers Festival Family Fun Day, I decided to take them along. The long line that started over an hour before the presentation was a good indicator of this hilarious author’s popularity and his talk was well worth waiting for. If you are keen on seeing Andy and listening to his amusing stories and observations yourself, check out the ‘Events’ tab on his website. He and Terry Denton are visiting Perth in August.
All members of my family enjoyed hearing him speak so when I saw this book on the list, I thought a FAMILY BOOK REVIEW would be fun and interesting.
BIG BROTHER (aged 9) says “A wonderful mix of humour, time travellers and plain old silliness. I recommend this to anyone who likes a good, funny book.”
LITTLE BROTHER (aged 7) told me “This book is fun and it’s one of my favourites. I like the birthday room because it is funny!”
MUM (ME!) particularly liked Inspector Bubblewrap with his rhyming building inspection reports and the TREE-NN updates on every page. The visits to different time periods were humorous yet educational and there is so much to see in each page’s illustrations. I can understand why my boys want to read these books repeatedly.
I found this book highly entertaining and I plan to go back to the others in the series when I get through my massive TBR (To Be Read) pile. The joys of working in a library… so many books, so little time! I have pre-ordered the next title, the 78-Storey Treehouse and we are excitedly awaiting its release. DAD is too busy looking at fishing forums on his smartphone but we will get him to read it soon 🙂
