All our regular, amazing, children’s events are back for 2018! Starting Monday 29 January 2018

Children's Activities

It’s almost February! Which means that January has slipped away from us very quickly – check out the round-up of our school holidays here.

The wonderful thing about February is that it’s back to school time for older kids and it’s back to our ‘regular’ events at the library.
Pram Jams, Storytime, LEGO Club, Bookstars, CoderDojo, and Learning English Through Storytime are all back for 2018! And Creative Kids has undergone a major redevelopment (much like Spearwood) and is now called Unplug n Play.

Do you have a baby or toddler?

Pram Jams are for you.
Pram Jam rhyme time sessions are an opportunity to come down to the library where one of our wonderful presenters will sing, rhyme, and read to you and your child. We encourage mums, dads, aunties, uncles, grandparents, really anyone with a connection to the child, to come down and join in. You might remember a rhyme or song from you childhood or learn something new to help you during meal or bath times. These sessions are also about developing your comfort and skills in singing and rhyming with your child as well as developing their early literacy skills. Each of the sessions has something different to offer so it’s worth checking out more than one. Sessions run during the school term.
Coolbellup Library – Mondays at 10am
Success Library – Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10am
Spearwood Library – Thursdays at 10:30am Spearwood will be close until March 6, please come and visit one of our other sessions instead.

Do you have a child over the age of two?

Storytimes are for you.
The focus at Storytime is reading and we love reading. One of our presenters will read a few stories, interspersed with rhymes and songs, and get children involved in the story and that week’s topic. After that your child, with a little help from you, will complete a craft on the topic. We encourage parents to let children do the craft themselves as much as possible as a way to develop fine motor skills in preparation for kindergarten and school. We try to incorporate a little maths, science, technology, and culture with our literacy and art focusses. And if you have any questions our staff and more than happy to help. If you need some tips on reading with your child we can help there too – this can be daunting for some parents but it’s so important for young minds. Unfortunately, the books we read at Storytimes are not for loan but if you ask there should be a copy in stock that we can find or reserve for you. Each of our presenters has different styles, and each of the sessions is a little different so try out more than one to see which one that’s right for you.
Success Library – Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30am
Coolbellup Library – Wednesdays at 10:30am
Spearwood Library – Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30am Spearwood will be close until March 6, please come and visit one of our other sessions instead.

Do you speak a language other than English at home?

Learning English Through Storytime (LETS) could be for you.
LETS is a ten-week booked Storytime at Success Library aimed at helping children develop English skills to prepare for school. For children aged 3-4 the sessions are focussed heavily on practising English and the craft is designed to encourage English conversation at home. LETS begins Tuesday 24 April. Bookings open 27 March 2018.

Do you have a child over five?

LEGO Club, Bookstars, or Unplug n Play could be for you.

LEGO Club is pretty straight-forward; come in and make something with our LEGO.
Spearwood Library – first Friday of the month at 3:30pm Spearwood will be close until March 6, please come and visit one of our other sessions instead.
Coolbellup Library – see Unplug n Play
Success Library – fourth Monday of the month at 3:30pm
Specific dates are here: LEGO Club (runs every month)

Bookstars is a monthly session at Success Library. The focus of these sessions is children reading themselves. If children read some of our Ready Steady Go early readers and note them on the special reading record you can come to the session for a certificate and prize (just ask at the desk for one of the records – they can only be returned to a Bookstar session though). At the actual session, we read a book and then do some craft. The sessions are run by a former teacher so it’s an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about your child’s reading.
Success Library – second Monday of the month at 3:30pm (runs every month to December)

Unplug n Play is a weekly session at Coolbellup Library. Come down and unplug from technology by playing a board game or being creative with LEGO. Regardless of the week, there is something exciting to do at Coolbellup on Wednesday afternoons.
Coolbellup Library – Wednesdays at 3:30pm (only during school terms)

Do you have a child into technology and coding?

CoderDojo is for you!
CoderDojo is an opportunity to learn coding skills, share them with other children, and create something amazing. Sessions are currently running only at Coolbellup (Tuesdays at 3:30pm) but a Spearwood CoderDojo is coming. Bookings are essential.
Ages 7+.

Those are just the things we do all of the time. Subscribe to the events or blogs to keep up-to-date on what we are doing at the library. We have lots of fun things happening – school holiday sessions, Halloween, Children’s Book Week, along with special activities through the sessions above.

There is something for every child at Cockburn Libraries.

Opening up a book and reading aloud to your baby is one of the best things you can do to help build their early language skills.
