Eliza Miller grew up in Australia as the only daughter of Jeannie a troubled young mother but with the constant support of two watchful godmothers, Olivia and Maxie. Despite having a tricky childhood she always felt loved and secure. That all changed just before her eighteenth birthday when a tragedy changes her life.

Thirteen years on and Eliza is living as safely as possible, avoiding close relationships and devoting herself to her job when out of the blue and invitation from one of her godmothers prompts a leap into the unknown.

Book cover for The Godmothers

I don’t want two wishy-washy godmothers. No dolls. No pink dresses. Just lots of adventures. Lots of spoiling. The pair of you like two mighty warriors protecting her at every step.

Jeannie

In hospital, when Eliza was only a day old.

Who is Eliza’s father?

Within a couple of weeks Eliza finds herself in Edinburgh. Her godmothers family is very complicated yet Eliza begins to blossom. She finds herself hopeful about the future and also ready to explore her past. The biggest mystery is- who is her father?

The book is set in Australia, Scotland and Ireland and is warm and funny and a great story about family, friendships and secrets. Eliza is a strong and resilient young lady and I loved following her story. I also loved following her relationship with her two godmothers.

Monica McInerney is one of Australia’s favourite authors. I have read all of her books and really enjoyed reading her latest book. I always enjoy the strong female characters and the journey she takes us on. I didn’t want to put it down.
