With the recent addition of a state-of-the-art facility in Success, the libraries in the City of Cockburn are able to provide an unprecedented level of services to the community. However, many local residents are unaware of the functions of our libraries in 2016. Here are the ten things you may not have known about what we do!

Public Access Computers

Did you know over our three libraries, we have 32 public use computers? Coolbellup has 6, Spearwood has 8 and Success has 18! They all have printing compatibility, word processing and internet connectivity. To use one, all you will need is your library card.

iPad and Memory Classes

In conjunction with Curtin University, Cockburn Libraries offer introductory iPad classes and Memory improvement classes. Memory classes give attendees a basic understanding of how to improve long and short term memory, as well as memory based games that can be taken home to master. The iPad classes are catered for beginners who would like to have a superior knowledge of how this technology can enhance their lives. iPads are supplied for the whole class, or you are welcome to bring your own. Both classes are very popular and bookings are essential. Please call 9411 3840 or click here for bookings or further information.

Storytime and Pram jams

We offer nurturing, learning environments for both the 0-2 and 2-5 age groups with our very popular children’s programs. Full of rhymes, craft and storytelling, both Story time and Pram jams are great ways to introduce your children to early literacy and the library environment.

Our schedule for Pram Jams is:

  • Coolbellup: 10am Mondays;
  • Success: 10am Wednesdays and Thursdays;
  • Spearwood: 1st Monday of the month.

Our Schedule for Storytime is:

  • Coolbellup: 10.30am Wednesdays
  • Success: 9.30 Tuesdays and Fridays
  • Spearwood: 10.30 Tuesdays and Fridays

There are no bookings for Storytime or Pram Jams, but please note that both programs run on the school calendar, with no sessions in school holidays.

Mobile printing, scan to email and scan to USB

Mobile printing enables you to send documents to one of our libraries to be printed and collected. Home printers can be temperamental machines, but we have excellent equipment to help you with your day to day online activity. Prints or copies are 20c for black and white and $1 for colour, both A3 and A4. Mobile printing is currently available at both Spearwood and Coolbellup libraries and soon to be at Success Library.

Scan to email means you are able to bring documents to one of our libraries, scan it and it will be sent to an email address of your choice. Scan to USB means that you can scan your documents and have them saved on a USB-thumb drive. Both of these services are free and excellent for instances where you need to sign documents and return them by email.

Inter Library Loans

Currently there are 120,000 items in the Cockburn library catalogue , but, sometimes the item you want is just not on our system. As part of the State Library of Western Australia, we are able to request an item to be borrowed from another public library in the state. This is a simple procedure and can be completed online, by phone or in person at any of our libraries. Interlibrary loans are a great service that enhances our ability to provide sometimes obscure items we don’t have as part of our collection.

Our Website!

Our website has many user-friendly functions to make your library experience greater. You can renew an item online, request a purchase or interlibrary loan, see what events are happening at the library and book in via our online calendar. We don’t like to brag, but our website is award winning and has hundreds of visitors each day! So please take some time and see how our website can help you!

Reserving an item

Most of our customers have reserved a book on one of their visits to our library, but did you know that you can do it from home? Yes, you can scroll through our catalogue and choose an item to be reserved for you. We then remove it from the shelf for you and keep it on our Reservations shelf. If you reserve a book that is currently on loan, you can be notified by SMS or email when that item has been returned and is ready for your collection. Once you have arrived at the library and have collected your item, you can then check it out using our self-service machines. Our self-check machines are easier to use than an ATM and help provide a fast option when you are borrowing items.

Conference Rooms at Success Library

The new Success Library has two rooms for hire. One has a kitchen, catering facilities, projector and is equipped for 50 people. Our other, larger room is a Conference Room that is equipped for 170 people, catering for community meetings, workshops, presentations or large groups.

Either room can be booked by emailing chcbookings@cockburn.wa.gov.au or calling 9411 3840.

E-books and Tech help

Cockburn Libraries subscribe to e-book and audiobook providers who supply our library service with thousands of online titles. These can be accessed through Overdrive, Borrowbox or RBDigital (formerly Zinio) apps on Android or Apple devices. As Audiobooks become increasingly popular, so does the demand for their compatibility on smart phones and tablets, if you are not familiar with these devices, we are here to help. In 2016 we are launching a new service to provide one-on-one help to members who would like to be able to access our catalogue without leaving their homes.

Our Variety of items

We have different types of items for loan on our catalogue including- Board books, Junior Non Fiction, Junior Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Adult Fiction, Magazines, Non Fiction, DVD’s, CD’s, Audio Books, Council Literature and much more!
