The most successful film in Japanese history, Spirited away brings us to the magical world of spirits. Written and directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki in 2001, this tale is charming, funny and surprising.

I believe that Miyazaki has a gift. His imagination breaks down barriers and you won’t need to be a fan of anime to love his stories. I was first enchanted by Princess Mononoke but I saw Spirited away recently and it took me back to my childhood.

This is the tale of Chihiro. While driving towards a new life with her parents, they stumble upon what seems to be an abandoned theme park. Chihiro is scared of the unknown and has a hard time adjusting to change but the adults are curious. Probably too much so.  As they go explore the place, she stays close to her dad but as he and her mother change, she will have to take care of herself. I don’t want to spoil the movie for you so I won’t say too much. Just know that it is about being afraid and most importantly conquering that fear.

It is a life lesson for everybody taught through the most mystical of worlds. What is meant to happen will and if you stay true to yourself, kind and giving, you will always manage.
