Taylor Schilling is Piper Chapman in the acclaimed series Orange Is The New Black. First seen on Netflix, it is now a worldwide phenomenon thanks to 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series. One of the best TV shows of the moment, it depicts life in a minimum security women’s prison in the funniest, quirkiest and most appealing way.

Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, the series is a fresh view on America’s federal system. Piper is young . She wants adventure. What’s better than an affair with an international drug smuggler who happens to be a girl. She falls in love and helps carry a suitcase, one time. Ten years later, she is now a law abiding citizen about to get married when her past catches up with her. She is sentenced to 15 months in prison and is sent to Litchfield Penitentiary. There she will meet incredible women and among them her ex-girlfriend. How will she cope? Will her relationship with her fiance be strong enough to survive such a turmoil?

Orange Is The New Black is for everybody. Both males and females are falling in love with this show. One of the reasons is that it is not only about Piper’s story. Almost every episode contains a flashback that gives us insight into the life of various inmates and prison guards’ pasts. And those stories are unbelievable and fascinating. How did they end up in this facility? They are obviously all minor offenders and you quite quickly get attached to them however, they are not archetypes. The writing is very clever and brings the romances, feuds, allegiances and friendships together brilliantly.

Of course, behind the comedy is also the corruption and inadequacies of the American prison system as well as the abuse of power by some correctional officers. The character of George Mendez “Pornstache” is hilarious but also terrifying for the inmates. Moreover, one thing that keeps coming back is that the women aren’t properly reinserted into the real world and often fail. Prison becomes easier. It is a world that they know and understand.

Anyway, this is a show worth watching.
