Pablo Escobar: Everyone has heard the name but are you familiar with the story? Narcos is a new TV series introduced by Netflix and it is fantastic. Incredibly interesting, it mixes fiction and facts perfectly.
“Plata O Plomo”: your choice, silver or lead.
“Despite his threats, many brave men defied him. And, true to form, when the pen failed … Pablo was always ready with the sword.” — Steve Murphy
Pablo Escobar was both brilliant and mad. In the late 1970’s, when a cocaine dealer from Peru came knocking on his door. He was smart enough to see the opportunities and he started manufacturing and distributing the drug in large quantities. From this point forward, Colombia was never the same. Told from the perspective of Steve Murphy, an american DEA agent hellbent on capturing Escobar, the show tells the story of narcotraffickers. How did they move the goods? How much money did they make? Who was affected by their illegal goods?
In Medellin, the black market consisted of alcohol, cigarettes, household appliances and guns before cocaine was introduced. Fortunately for dealers and unfortunately for the rest of the world, it is a very profitable drug. It rapidly took over all other businesses. Manpower was redirected towards laboratories in the rain forest and distribution to the United States. Is is also a very addictive drug and once you try it , you always want more. Pablo Escobar jumped at the opportunity. This is part of his story.
A reign of terror.
“Geniuses are always branded as crazy.”— Pablo Escobar
Ironically, Narcos is like cocaine because it is very addictive. I was hooked from the moment I started watching. I particularly love the fact that it is based on a true story and that at instances, actual footage and pictures from the 1980’s have been added. It makes it all very authentic. Indeed, Pablo Escobar did exist and he was an incredible human being. Some admired him, some loathed him but most feared him. His story is told with accuracy and humour.
I have to warn people though because there is a lot of violence. However, it is history. Most of it actually happened.
If you like thrillers or crime stories, look no further. This is the show for you.
