Written and directed by Rowan Joffé, Before I go to Sleep is the terrifying version of the uplifting romantic comedy Fifty First Dates with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. It starts with a simple idea. Every night, all the information stored during the day erase themselves and the person wakes up with no memory. How would you react to waking up with a stranger in your bed every day? What would you do if you realized by looking in the mirror that you have lost 20 years of your life?

Adapted from the 2011 novel of the same name by S. J. Watson, Before I go to Sleep tells the story of Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman). Christine had an accident a long time ago that affected her memory. Every morning her husband Ben (Colin Firth) has to tell her the same tale. They are married, she stays at home because of her condition. Look at the pictures and believe. However, Christine wants to remember more than anything and is starting to ask questions. She finally sees a neurologist, Dr. Nash (Marc Strong) without Ben knowing.

Will she manage to get her memories back? Is her husband hiding anything from her? Can she trust her doctor? Can she trust anybody?

The critics for this movie are divided. Some say that the story has huge holes and that its comical counterpart was a lot better. However, I have to disagree. I didn’t have any expectations before watching it. I had never heard positive or negative reviews about it but it still sat at home for a very long time until I ran out of better things to watch. I put it on thinking that if I didn’t get into the story in less than 10 minutes, I’d put something else on. I loved it. Personally, I though that it was full of suspense and it kept me on the edge of my couch.

Before I go to Sleep is a brilliant psychological thriller carried by great actors. It has just the right amount of dread and you will like it even if you are not a fan of Nicole Kidman. She is in almost every frame and does an excellent job. You will be scared with her, will scream with her and hope with her.
