There is a reason everybody is talking about The Dressmaker. It is brilliant!
I personally haven’t read the book but I might just start. Borrow the Dressmaker on DVD and I guarantee that, like me, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen at home. Absolutely stunning, this movie has everything. It has got the most intense story-line and manages to mix murders, deception, love, humour and craziness together for the audience’s delight.
Myrtle Dunnage (Kate Winslet) was sent away when she was a child after being accused of murdering a fellow student. Now all grown up, she returns to the town as Tilly and she is definitely a changed woman. Set in the Australian outback in 1950’s, this thriller/drama/comedy speaks mainly of revenge and redemption but manages to surprise at every turn. Tilly has been to Milan, Spain and Paris and she is now an expert dressmaker. She will transform the women while looking for answers about her past. Slowly we discover than the town is corrupt and diseased by its inhabitants. Only Teddy (Liam Hemsworth) is there to support and give love to the modern, wonderful femme fatale she has become.
Based on Rosalie Ham’s best selling novel, The Dressmaker is a wonderful adaptation that received many awards such as Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costume Design and People’s Choice Award for Favourite Australian Film.
I personally loved this movie because events are able to veer from tragedy to comedy in a single scene and even sentence. It is refreshing to watch such a vibrant tale. It feels typically Australian and it’s bloody great. The outback is such a magnificent contrast against Kate Winslet’s vibrant performance. She is stunning and perfect for the role. We feel for her. I could keep writing and praising the movie but I won’t. Do yourself a favour and just borrow it at your local Cockburn library.
