Empty your bladders, turn the lights off and hang on to your couches: Deliver Us From Evil is here. Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez and Olivia Munn bring us one of the best horror movies this year.
Absolutely chilling, it is based on the life of Ralph Sarchie, a special forces New York police officer who has a gift for sensing and putting himself into bad situations. Dedicated to his work, he often spends more time on duty than at home, leaving his wife and his daughter on their own. He investigates the most gruesome crimes and it is easy to understand the strain it is putting on him and on his soul but he has managed to deal with everything so far. That is, of course until true evil shows its face…
Directed by Scott Derrickson, Deliver Us From Evil has a bit of everything for everyone. It is horrific and scary but it is also funny at times. The topic is at the same time very well brought up. Indeed, it is not supernatural from the beginning. The tension is built in a way that makes it real and believable. It is a story of family and justice first and exorcism second.
I didn’t know what to expect when I first came across this film but I knew that I couldn’t go wrong with Eric Bana playing the main character. Like in Troy, Munich or Chopper, he is outstanding. I am not a fan of the genre but, as I said, it is more than just a horror movie. Surrounded by great actors, the Australian plays the part perfectly. I absolutely recommend it.
