The State Library has just released an updated, online version of it’s comprehensive guide to family history research in Western Australia:  Dead Reckoning: how to find your way through the Genealogical Jungle of Western Australia. This online guide, updated from the 1997 print edition,  is an excellent resource for anyone undertaking genealogical and biographical research. The guide begins with the sage advice:

To begin to trace a family tree it is advisable to start with the known (eg yourself, your parents and grandparents etc) and work back through successive generations researching one person at a time.
