Bohemian Rhapsody – DVD Review

Score 91%

I probably don’t need to say it but this is a movie you don’t want to miss. Everybody is talking about it. At the 76th Golden Globe Awards, it won Best Motion Picture and Best Actor in the Drama category. So quickly head to the library catalogue to reserve a copy of the DVD right now. You won’t be disappointed.

For those who have been living under a rock, Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury and follows the lead singer of the British rock band Queen from 1970 to 1985.

Fearless lives forever.

Queen defied stereotypes and their music definitely proves it. Yes, Bohemian Rhapsody is a celebration of the band. Yes, it is meant to flourish rather than tarnish but in my opinion it is well deserved.

The film is centered on Freddie Mercury and starts when he joins Queen. His ideas are so revolutionary that they may unsettle at first but the public understands the genius behind the iconic songs. Quickly, the band becomes a success beyond their wildest dreams. However, with success comes dark influences. Alcohol, drugs, parties and so-called friends, surround Freddie. He may lose himself if he is not careful.

[after listening to Bohemian Rhapsody]
Ray Foster: It goes on forever, six bloody minutes!
Freddie Mercury: I pity your wife if you think six minutes is forever.

Malek also deserves credit. He is impressive as Freddie Mercury. The way he recreated his moves onstage is really to be commended as well as the portrayal of his loneliness suffered at the height of his career. Malek has channeled Mercury’s heart and hurt.

Of course, we cannot forget that this is a movie and to keep the audience interested, the story of the band and Freddie Mercury himself has been somewhat dramatized. This has been criticized a lot but  I didn’t find it to be too much of an issue myself. Once you know it is not a documentary, it is easy to just sit back and enjoy it. And it you do need to know more about Queen, we have a few books that might interest you.

Summary Freddie Mercury is a name that needs no introduction or does it? We all heard the songs a million times but are we really familiar with the story behind it? Bohemian Rhapsody tells the tale of Queen form 1970 to 1985 and it is almost accurate.
