I have read American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis a number of times and each time I tell myself that I should never read it again. I consider myself a functioning member of society and, as such, should not get as much enjoyment as I do from this tome of filth and depravity. I remember buying my first copy of the book from, I think, Dymocks when I was maybe 14 and I could tell that the cashier wanted to deny me my purchase. But I got it and read it and have never been the same.

The story follows Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street trader who plotlessly leads us deep into the decadent world of money and power and Trump. Teetering on the edge of insanity, Patrick spends his days dining at expensive restaurants, clubbing with models and killing and eating various people.

It is hard to write a review that doesn’t make the book sound like a gory slasher romp and all of the negative reviews you may read about this book will try to pigeonhole it as such, but violence isn’t the point of this story.

A mesmerizing read!
