Music journalist Barry Divola on writing fiction

Barry Divola is a well known music critic, journalist, musician and now author. He’s been a senior writer for both Rolling Stone and Who magazine and contributes to The Sydney Morning Herald. He now lives in Perth and has a regular music slot on ABC Radio’s Drive program.

Driving Stevie Fracasso, Barry’s first novel, is a glorious, music-infused, rollicking road -trip and a love letter to New York City. ‘It’s the layers to the story, its humour and its heart that makes this journey irresistible’.

Stevie is an ex-rock star and his brother Rick is a jaded music journalist, together they’re on a road trip in a stolen Nissan Stanza from Texas to New York. What could possibly go wrong?

For fans of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity and The Big Lebowski. Of course the road trip comes with a top quality mix-tape…..

Barry will entertain us by playing a handful of songs.

‘A smart, funny and wholly endearing story about how, though we may sometimes lose ourselves along the way, the road always leads back to the things that bring us joy.’

“It’s deeply moving, poignant, ridiculously funny and rock and roll drenched, an ode to brotherly love and a tribute to family, to lovers, to New York… and to music.” – Trent Dalton, author of Boy Swallows Universe and All Our Shimmering Skies
