NEW ANIME TITLES ON DVD TO BORROW FROM COCKBURN LIBRARIES

So, another year is over and a new one is just beginning. Hmmm … I think there’s a song about that. Anyway, we’ve seen some awesome anime titles join our collection this last year so to celebrate the incoming year let’s add some more! We have a nice spread of genres this time round so there should be something for everybody.

Let’s start with an old title I hadn’t watched for a while. It’s weird, full of oddball characters, has some funky animation stylings and doesn’t seem to make any sense at all. It’s great! And has a cool intro tune, too.

FLCL

“Noata wants to be normal. But with a talented brother leaving Japan for the US to play baseball, everyone now looks at him a bit differently. His brother’s girlfriend is acting strange and now there’s an even stranger girl hitting on him. Literally. With a bass guitar.”

Pretty much sums up adolescence, lol.

The next few are not particularly similar but they all revolve around younger characters:

Wow, high school in Japan must be sweet. What with those after school student clubs that are into all sorts of cool stuff, like: high tea, music and bands, dance and drama, gaming and otaku culture – even weird occult stuff and supernatural investigations. Not some girls, though. Check out:

Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C3

“When Yura Yamato’s roommate Sonora asks her to join her club, it quickly becomes clear that the girls of Stella Women’s Academy are VERY different. It turns out that she belongs to a club known as C3 (which stands for Command, Control and Communications) who’s main after school activity is playing survival games! It’s not a typical teenage girl pastime, but Sonora and her trigger happy friends are seriously into it.”

Of course, if you live in a dystopian sci-fi/fantasy universe like Last Exile, you aren’t just playing at survival games, you’re living them! I love the aesthetic created in the Last Exile universe – a curious mix of pirateering adventure in the skies, steam punk future tech, WWI inspired fighter planes and more.

Last Exile : Fam, the Silver Wing – Collection 1Collection 2

Now for something completely different,

a possible antidote for those who feel all superhero-ed out: the perfect, laconic anti-superhero. It’s …

One Punch Man

“Saitama only became a hero for fun, but after three years of special training, he finds that he can be at even the mightiest opponents with a single punch. Though he faces new enemies every day, it turns out being devastatingly powerful is actually kind of a bore. Can a hero be too strong?”

Something, again, a bit … er … different. An avid reader dies, is reincarnated as a dog and somehow ends up in the ‘care’ of his favourite author. Weirder still, she turns out to be a bit of a sadist with attachment issues! Not sure what to say about this one except, possibly, “only in anime?” Oh, and “we do not endorse or condone the content of any … etc. etc.”

Dog & Scissors

Changing the mood to something a bit psychologically darker, an excellent murder/mystery, suspense series I mentioned ages ago as “what I’m watching now … “

Erased Volume 1Volume 2

Another, darker title but in a visceral, brutal and bloody, gangland crime and violence kind of way.

Gangsta

“In the city of Ergastulum, a shady ville filled with made men and petty thieves … and cops on the take, there are some deeds too dirty for even its jaded inhabitants to touch. Enter the Handymen, Nic and Worick, who take care of the jobs no one else will handle.”

WHAT I’M WATCHING … THIS SPACE!

Instead of mentioning what I’m currently watching I’d like to tell you that “Anime Arvo” is on again very soon. If you need reminding, it’s a 2 hour session in which we will screen the first episodes of 4 awesome anime titles! I know, right! Here’s the details:

ANIME ARVO @SUCCESS LIBRARY
THURSDAY 11 JANUARY 2018
2 – 4PM

Stella Women’s Academy               Eden of the East

Cute High Earth Defence Club         Terror in Resonance

Do please keep in mind that while we wish to welcome all anime fans to the event, the first title is rated PG, the final three are rated M, so we recommend a +15-ish audience – and we expect parents to know and decide if the shows are suitable for their children.

And, last but not least, we are always adding volumes to those titles we don’t seem to be able to get rid of! I mean, those fantastic and seemingly endless series we all love. Yeah, that. See you next time!
