12 new anime titles on DVD to borrow from Cockburn Libraries.
Spring is in the air! Well, not really: 18°C maximums, rain, hail, thunder, blizzards … [maybe not the last one – Ed.] But regardless of the weather, another change in seasons means we have an excuse to post another anime update! Yattaaaaaa!
We have an interesting mix of titles for you this time around, so lets get stuck in. First up, and for the first time in quite a while, we have a few feature films to showcase:
While published as part of the prestegious Studio Ghibli Collection, this title is actually a Japanese-French-Belgian co-production – a first for Ghibli. Labelled “a poignant, wordless fable of luminous imagery and swirling animation” I’m curious to see the results of this unique artistic collaboration.
Some time ago we randomly aquired Evangelion 3:33 : you can (not) redo – the third instalment in an ongoing series of feature films that retells and re-imagines an all time classic, seminal, landmark series: Neon Genesis Evangelion. That meant, of course, that we had to get the first and second films:
“It is 2015: half of Earth’s population is dead, victims of the “Second Impact”. Summoned by his enigmatic father, 14-year-old Shinji arrives in the rebuilt city Tokyo-3 as a giant creature, an Angel, attacks! Forced to pilot a bio-mechanical suit known as an Evangelion, Shinji must face his fears and defend the city or die trying!”
“In the earliest battles against the monstrous Angels, young Eva pilots Shinji and Rei were forced to carry humanity’s hopes on their shoulders.”
Redesigned by creator Hideaki Anno, this film series is touted as “the definitive EVANGELION for a new generation!” I may be a crusty old grump but I’d call it a definitive cow-milking, dead-horse-flogging, cash-grab but you should make up your own minds – just watch the original series first!
We also have some new ‘complete collections’, so you won’t die waiting in the 6 months until the concluding half of a series is released:
“Alibaba is a young carrier who dreams of gaining enough money to buy a whole country. To achieve this goal he must venture into a mysterious ruin called a “Dungeon”, which is said to hold secret treasures deep within its labyrinth. Unfortunately Alibaba lacks the courage to carry out his plan and remains a worker. Until… One day Alibaba meets a mysterious boy named Aladdin, who can summon a mighty blue spirit from a flute and travels across the continent in search of Djinn Metal Vessels.”
“Mugen’s a buck wild warrior: violent, thoughtless and womanizing. Jin is a vagrant ronin: mysterious, traditional, well-mannered and very strong. These two fiercely independent warriors couldn’t be more different from one another, yet their paths cross when Fuu, a ditzy waitress, saves them from being executed when they are arrested after a violent swordfight. Fuu convinces the two vagrant young men to help her find a mysterious samurai ‘who smells of sunflowers.’ And their journey begins … ”
Now here is a classic series of the modern era [it’s already 12 years old?! – Ed.] inexplicably combining traditional samurai tales with a funky hip-hop soundtrack; a sweeping narrative that can encompass moments ranging from the funny and slapstick to the serious and emotionally wrought. It is certainly one of a kind.
“A thousand years after the alien Gauna destroyed the Earth, a small remnant of humanity still fights on to survive, fleeing on the gargantuan asteroid-based spaceship Sidonia. But centuries of light and warfare have changed mankind in incredible ways – ” [Uh, uh, uh. Spoilers! – Ed.]
I’m not usually a fan of fully 3D rendered anime but this title’s sci-fi storyline and universe is so interesting I’ve been able to overcome my stylistic prejudices to thoroughly enjoy this one.
And one that looks like a ‘part 2 of … ‘ but is actually a whole new season of …
“It’s been a little over a year since Inspector Akane Tsunemori chose to put her faith in the Sibyl System and keep its true nature a secret. Assigned to a new division with a few familiar faces, Akane and her team of Inspectors and Enforcers are charged with upholding the law in a society where just thinking about a crime is enough to get you locked away forever — or executed on the spot.”
Did I just mention how awesome complete collections are because you don’t have to wait around for the conclusion? Well, here’s some ‘other parts’ of series we know you’ve been waiting for:
“The story continues as more chaos ensues – In the aftermath of the assault against Izaya Orihara, signs of new disorder begin to develop. Holding his own ideals, Mikado gains the powers of both the “Dollars” and the “Blue Squares”. Meanwhile … paths cross and trouble brews as the plot thickens in this complicated web of conspiracies”
No need to elaborate on this series, if you don’t already know it by name at least, what are you doing?! Finally, these titles will complete our set of:
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Well, as the cliche goes, I’m afraid that’s all we’ve got time for! Stay tuned for updates on new releases and our next Anime Arvo. Jaa ne!
