Directed by Clint Eastwood, American Sniper tells the tale of a Texas boy who after breaking up with his girlfriend enrolls in the army as a US navy SEALS sniper. However, this is not just another war movie. Based on the memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History (2012) by Chris Kyle, it is a beautiful drama which focuses on choosing between love, family and career.  Also the “Sexiest Man Alive” (People magazine, 2011), Bradley Cooper certainly makes this movie more appealing than it first seems.

Chris Kyle learnt to shoot and hunt with his father when he was a kid. Little did he know that this would be a stepping stone to what was one of the most impressive career as a sniper ever seen in America. Chris trained with the navy SEALS and tried to combine family life with four tours in Afghanistan. Amazing on the field, he had to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder when home. It is really touching to see his dilemma. He knows that he can help the men overseas and staying put, even if it is to be with the ones he loves, is almost unbearable for him.

I was looking forward to watching this movie. Bradley Cooper is a great actor of comedy (the Hangover), thriller (Limitless) and drama (Silver Linings Playbook) and knowing that he got deeply involved in this role, having an amazing body transformation I couldn’t wait to see it. However, I was disappointed by the first part of the film.

Patriotic like only the Americans can be, it annoyed me to witness the virtuous going to war against the evil Iraqi’s. War is not that black and white and especially this one. It felt a bit too much to me. On the other hand, the true story of Captain Chris Kyle is absolutely unbelievable and deserves to be told.  As the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, he was praised and celebrated for is military successes. However, to combine war with a stable family life is nearly impossible and we can witness firsthand his struggle.

Cooper gives an astonishing performance, brilliantly directed by a master of the genre, Clint Eastwood.
