ABC TV’s First Tuesday Book Club last night announced the 10 Aussie Books to Read Before You Die, as part of the National Year of Reading. The top 10 is based on online public voting over the course of 2012. So here are the 10 books with the most votes:

  1. Cloudstreet / Tim Winton
  2. The Book Thief / Markus Zusak
  3. A Fortunate Life / A.B. Facey
  4. The Harp in the South / Ruth Park
  5. The Power of One / Bryce Courtenay
  6. Jasper Jones / Craig Silvey
  7. The Magic Pudding / Norman Lindsay
  8. The Slap / Christos Tsiolkas
  9. The Secret River / Kate Grenville
  10. Picnic at Hanging Rock / Joan Lindsay
The voting was done against a shortlist of 50 “Australian classics” compiled by ABC TV after asking “a range of Australians; from the worlds of sport, politics, entertainment, as well as grass roots readers” for their favourite Aussie books. So it was impossible for books not on the original shortlist to be considered as essential Aussie reading. You would expect that the list would have been very different if the voting public had had free reign to vote for any Australian book.

Below are the rest of the 50 books that the public had to choose from, in the ordered that they finished the polling (the library doesn’t have all 40 books so some of the links below won’t show a book).
