This week I’m presenting a rather high brow blog about classic literature. Together we are going to go on a journey of intellectual discovery and nourishment, we are going to sniff the rarefied air of … Oh, all right, we’re going to talk about baby books. Are you happy now? Let’s compromise and talk about two new titles that have come in recently. They are from the Cozy Classics series, which is a new sensation in board books that distils some of the ‘great works’ of literature into 12 child-friendly words accompanied by 12 beautifully handcrafted images of needle-felted characters. I could go on about the wondrousness of Christmas time, the fact I’ve never seen a “White Christmas” (thank you Bing Crosby!) or wax lyrical about...Read More
Last week was the first week of 4th term (of the school year) and that means Pram Jams and Storytime are back on in Cockburn Libraries. I used one of the many new board books that come across my desk to read at last week’s Pram Jam and it gave me the idea for this week’s blog. It also neatly flows on from the theme of my last blog post, which was about “work” – or, things we do. So, the theme this week is: I can … ! The difference between the two themes might not seem very big to adults but let’s examine...Read More
The new Success branch of Cockburn Libraries is now open. Yay! And one of the new things we have decided to try out is having a separate Anime section in our DVD collection. You might be asking yourself, so what is anime? Well, basically, it is animation from Japan (which includes film and TV releases). It is a diverse medium with an aesthetic that immediately identifies it as ‘Japanese’ (as opposed to traditional western-style animation) and at the same time, within itself, has a multitude of very diverse and distinctive art styles. It has always explored genres, themes, production styles and audience demographics that have long been avoided or ignored by western...Read More
