A taste of fun @ your library

The April school holiday program is out now. These holidays have a decidedly foodie theme, kicking off with rocky road making on Tuesday 6 April at Spearwood Library. There will be Magic Gardening so you can grow your own vegies and there will be more cooking with Fun Food Treats  – making healthy, scrumptious after-school snacks. The program finishes with Paper Printing at Success Library on Thursday 15 April and at Spearwood Library on Friday 16 April. Keeping with the food theme this will involve printmaking using various items of food. Holiday activites are aimed at 5 to 12 year olds. All...

Review: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The recent film of The Road (starring Viggo Mortensen, and unfairly neglected at this year’s Oscars) may have brought Cormac McCarthy’s ‘piece de resistance’ novel to an even greater audience. However, the film’s understated power remains secondary to the deeply moving, bleak, and yet oddly life-affirming experience of reading The Road. When I first read this book, upon its release in 2007, I was fond of saying to friends that it was the best book I’d read in the last five years, and that it was truly ‘the novel for our time’. Yet, as time passes, and McCarthy’s vision...

I can make crepes

I was inspired by Pascale Benkirane’s great cooking workshop at Spearwood Library last week where she made yummy chocolate crepes with strawberries. Armed with the recipe and the memory of what the finished mixture looked like (smooth and very runny), I thought I’d give it a try. Having scraped and eaten half the teflon off my frypan, I decided to treat myself to a new non-stick frypan. What a joy! I just wiped a little vegetable oil onto it and it lasted the whole cooking session. I thought I’d try a savoury crepe and made it with ham and...

Review: Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica (or more affectionately known as BSG) is a formidable series that spans a pilot miniseries (2003), 4 seasons (2004-2009), webisodes (The Resistance, Razor Flashbacks and The Face of the Enemy), two feature-length films (The Plan and Razor) and yet another feature length pilot (Caprica) – all of which stem from the 1978-79 brainchild of Glen A Larson. The series features a quintessential space war between humanity and a human-made (originally) robotic race – the Cylons. The series starts with the unexpected near-obliteration of the human civilisation (spread across twelve planets – the Twelve Colonies) by the Cylons...
