Storytime with Rebecca – Roald Dahl

My name is Rebecca, and this is my first post as the new Young People’s Service Librarian for Coolbellup.

We’ve had some wonderful Storytimes this term, with one of our highlights being the Roald Dahl week. We celebrated a few days after what would have been Roald Dahl’s 98th birthday with an oral recount of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory using cut outs of the characters and an Ooompa Loompa rhyme, not forgetting real Wonka chocolate and golden tickets!

Well suited for mid primary aged children, Roald Dahl stories make a great shared reading experience with your children, particularly if you read a chapter a night together before bed time.
Dahl’s stories always have some moral or message, along with upholding good character in the face of opposition. These can be good talking points with your children during reading.

Here are some of my favourites:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an undisputed classic. Charlie’s fortunes change when he wins a golden ticket to visit Mr Willy Wonka’s Chocolate factory and he would never guess the adventures he would have and the outcome at the end of the day.

The BFG

The BFG

Fancy being captured by a giant, luckily Sophie was captured by a big friendly one… what adventures does she encounter? Read the book to find out.

Matilda

Matilda

Matilda has magical powers she uses to rid her school of evil characters. Matilda was the last book Roald Dahl wrote so literally his last words to his readers.

Rhyme
Our rhyme this week is a shortened version of the Ooompa Loompa song from the original 1971 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder.

Ooompa Loompa
(tap the beat on your knees)

Oompa Loompa doom-pa-dee-do

I have a perfect puzzle for you

If you are wise, you’ll listen to me

Craft
I have two crafts for you this week. One suitable for younger children, and one if you’re feeling more adventurous…
Make your own Willy Wonka Chocolate Bar. You will need a couple of sheets of paper or card, scissors, tape and some golden paper, or you can colour some white paper. Use this Willy Wonka Template to make your chocolate bar wrapper.

We made this diorama at Book stars last week. You will need some cardboard, blue tac or plasticine, toothpicks, an assortment of decorative bits and bobs and maybe some cheap lollies ($5.00 will get you a big bag from Big W). Colour in your chocolate river, use coloured sand or paint…whatever you’ve got available. This could also make a really good craft activity for a birthday party too!

Happy October holidays!
