Storytime with Karen – Dogs

Who let the dogs out?
(woof, woof, woof, woof)

This week the dogs are out for our doggie storytime theme. There are many wonderful children’s picture books available featuring all sorts of dogs. The three I have chosen are all fairly recent publications. But there are hundreds more to choose from!

Books to Read

Norbert: what can little me do? / Julie Freyermuth

If you are looking for a heartwarming and inspirational story for young children, then look no further than Norbert: what can little me do? This is an international award winning book inspired by a real registered therapy dog named Norbert. Norbert is a very small, very cute, fluffy, white dog and he has moved with his owner to the big city. Poor Norbert. He is too little to do any of the things that he thinks he would like to do. He can’t even climb stairs, because every step is way too high. Norbert encounters all kinds of animals who are louder, stronger, and bigger and who can swim, fly, and climb trees. All things he can’t do. At first Norbert doesn’t realise that he, like everyone else, has something to offer. Eventually though Norbert does realise his own special gift. And you don’t need to be big to make a positive difference in the world.

Pig the Pug / Aaron Blabey

Aaron Blabey is an award winning Australian children’s author and illustrator. And who could resist a pug like Pig? What a great cover! But Pig is a selfish and greedy pug. Poor old sausage dog Trevor just wants to share Pig’s toys because it might be fun. But Pig flips his wig and gets his comeuppance (because, well, pigs can’t fly!) Hopefully Pig has learnt a lesson! This is a fabulous book about learning to share. Told with humour and accompanied by very funny and vivid illustrations it’s sure to raise a giggle or two!

Found You! / Mardi Davies

found you!

What child doesn’t like to play a game of hide-and-seek? Florence Moon and her dog Trevor are great friends and have a backyard that is perfect for playing hide-and-seek. Unfortunately Trevor is pretty awful at hiding. In fact, he is terrible at it. Every time! But to Florence’s great delight she discovers that Trevor is a really good finder. Every time! A book about fun and friendship – and being ready to change a ‘game plan’. (My sisters and I used to play hide-and-seek with our little dog Cindy – she found us every time too!)

(Please note that these books are not available in our main collection yet, however we can request them for you).

A Doggie Rhyme or Two

Dogs in the Dirt

Ten little doggies went out one day
(Hold 10 fingers up)
To dig in the dirt and play, play, play.
(Pretend to dig)
Five were spotted, and five were not.
(Show one hand at a time)
And at dinner time they ate a lot!
(Pretend to eat)

There was a farmer who had a dog
And Bingo was his name-O.
And Bingo was his name-O!

Did You Know? The most popular dog names in 2014 were Max and Jessie. (Source:

Craft Idea

sausage dog craft

Make a sausage dog just like Trevor (from Pig the Pug)

Draw or print a picture of a sausage dog. Colour it in. Cut out the front and back sections of the sausage dog. Concertina a piece of coloured paper and glue between the front and back sections. Tape a popstick to the back of both sections.

And Remember:
Reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Happy reading!

PS Be sure to tell me your favourite picture book about dogs. There are just so many to choose from.

I completed my tertiary qualification in Library and Information Studies in 1991 and began my career as a Librarian at the Supreme Court Law Library in 1992. Later that same year, I took a position as a Reference Librarian at the Perth Public Library and have been working in public libraries ever since. I have become very interested in the importance of early literacy and the significant relationship between reading for pleasure and the future success of a child.
