Storytime with Jessica – Opposites

I’m very excited to bring you this Storytime as it marks the end of my time at Spearwood and Coolbellup Libraries (which is very sad) and the beginning of my time as the Young People’s Services Coordinator at Success. We are busy preparing the new library for the opening. If you do come to Success Storytime however you should come and visit us as the Cockburn Youth Centre as we are holding Storytimes and Pram Jams there in the interim.

This week I am going to be talking about Opposites.

At The Park

At The Park by Rebecca Rissman

This is always the first book I read when I do opposites because it is an excellent introduction to a topic which is very abstract and difficult to understand. This book introduces the topic through pictures and examples.

Up & Down

Up and Down by Britta Teckentrup

This book is lovely and always a big hit, it uses flaps to describe the journey of Little Penguin from his iceberg to his friend. He swims in front of friendly dolphins but hides behind the terrifying sharks. The flaps provide fun as well as a visual movement between in front and behind or over and under which helps children connect to the idea of opposites.

The rhyme this week is an old favourite that we do at Pram Jams and Storytimes though we are adding a little twist for this Storytime.

Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Heads and Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Knees and Toes
Knees and Toes
Heads and Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Knees and Toes
And we all clap hands together.

Eyes and Ears, Mouth and Nose
Mouth and Nose
Mouth and Nose
Eyes and Ears, Mouth and Nose
Mouth and Nose
And we all clap hands together.

Except that is much too easy for an Opposites Storytime so once we have done it forwards then we need to do it backwards!

Nose and Mouth, Ears and Eyes
Ears and Eyes
Ears and Eyes
Nose and Mouth, Ears and Eyes
Ears and Eyes
And we all clap hands together.

Toes and Knees, Shoulders and Heads
Shoulders and Heads
Shoulders and Heads
Toes and Knees, Shoulders and Heads
Shoulders and Heads
And we all clap hands together.

In my experience children are so much better at that than adults.

Craft

Big and Small craft

The craft this time around is part sorting activity and part opposites practise.

Doing this is very easy using our Big and Small Craft Template and absolutely anything you have around the house.

You can also ask children to go outside and hunt for things in nature that are big and small (or petite and enormous). We use different craft bits and pieces for our version at Storytime (straws, patty pans, dot stickers, pop sticks, etc.) but this craft will lend itself to a range of different things.

If there is a fun activity or book about opposites that you would like to share we would love to hear about it below.

I was a teacher for six years before becoming a Young People's Services Librarian. I taught everything from kindy to year seven and I'm really excited to be working towards greater early literacy with the children of Cockburn.
