Storytime with Briana – Bathtime

Ah, bathtime as a toddler. When you’re out, you don’t want to get in, and when you’re in, you don’t want to get out! Reading books about an everyday event can be a great idea, as it gives children a chance to see their own world experiences reflected back to them. The kids at Storytime had a lot of fun telling me about their own bath times because it’s something they had all experienced. There are some really wonderful books about bath time out there that are sure to be enjoyed by kids and their parents.

Books

Book Cover - The Sea of Bath” title=“View this item in the library catalogue

The Sea of Bath / Bob Logan

A sleepy old captain sails on a very strange sea! Ducks squeak, bears blow bubbles, there is an odd ship called “Soap,” and his voyages always end with the sea’s water slowly draining away. Will he ever discover what sea he sails? The illustrations are charming, and the captain’s adventures on his ‘sea’ are delightful to read.

Get out of My Bath! / Britta Teckentrup

This book is designed for reading out loud, with a fun interactive element written into the text and added to illustrations. Tip Ellie one way in her book, and she sloshes with her water to that end! However, when unwanted visitors join Ellie in her bath, the real fun begins. The kids had a great time with this book, shouting out when prompted and feeling involved in Ellie’s story.

Book Cover – Bathtime Piggywiggy” title=“View this item in the library catalogue

Bathtime Piggywiggy / Christyan and Diane Fox

Piggywiggy imagines the different things he could do in the water during bath time. Could he become a long-distance swimmer? The pilot of a lifeboat? The captain of a submarine? To add to the fun, the pages stretch and fold out to reveal Piggywiggy’s adventures, which kids will absolutely love! Lots of gasps and delight as we pulled out the pages to see what Piggywiggy would do!

Book Cover – Big Red Bath” title=“View this item in the library catalogue

Big Red Bath / Julia Jarman and Adrian Reynolds

Two children have a bath, and all manner of creatures decide to join the fun! This is a classic story, told as delightful poem, about the fun and imagination that a bath time can inspire. The kids wanted to find the dog on each page, so this can be a fun hide-and-seek book too!

Songs

There are some really great action songs for bath time!

This is the way we…

This is the way we wash our face, wash our face, wash our face.
This is the way we wash our face when we’re sitting in the bath tub!
This is the way we wash our hair…
This is the way we splash in the tub…
This is the way we get nice and dry…

Splish Splash Splosh

Splish Splash splosh I’m having a wash
Splosh splash splish I’m as wet as a fish
Soap on my body, shampoo in my hair
Rubadub dub now I’m clean every where
Splish, splash, splish splash splosh,
I’m having a wash!

Elephant in the bath.

One elephant in the bathtub going for a swim.
Knock, Knock (Clap twice)
Splash, Splash,  (Slap knees twice)
Come on in! (Motion with both hands to come in)
(Continue on to however many elephants, until no more can fit in! We played this song out on the whiteboard, and the kids had fun guessing when no more elephants would fit!)

Craft

Our craft today was a simple glue-and-colour, which is a craft all ages can enjoy. We had a bath tub and a rubber ducky to colour in and stick onto coloured paper.  However, we had an added element today- fun ‘bubbles’ to add to our pictures!

These bubbles are actually packing peanuts sliced up to create fun bubbly circles. You can use a regular glue-stick to stick these down with, but make sure you’re generous so your bubbles don’t float away!
