You’re hearing it FIRST from me!! Nick Sharratt is Hairy Zero Cool. He’s The Berries and Fully Darb. I can’t spend all day educating you in internet slang but just for you newbies it means double awesome and he very definitely IS! When a young children’s writer uses words like Zoopermarket and Fangtastic then you know he’s the bomb. An intrepid author who puts baa-lambs in bras and hairy caterpillars in bobble hats. You want to see an adorable brown bunny with an awesome overbite? Nick Sharratt is your man. Enough chitter-chatterpillars ( A Sharrattism). Let the books speak for themselves; and also the owl dressed up like a lop-sided Christmas tree.

One Fluffy Baa-Lamb and Ten Hairy Caterpillars

If you met me on the street and said’ Shan, what’s your favourite combinations of things?’ I would definitely say fluffy baa-lambs and hairy caterpillars. Obviously Nick Sharratt, the omnipotent author of One Fluffy Baa-Lamb and Ten Hairy Caterpillars perceived a market because wa-lah!, a book exists. These baa- lambs race cars, sing ooh-la-la, chat blah-blah on their mobiles and are even wear-a-bra- lambs. I haven’t even mentioned the hairy caterpillars who wear bobble hats, are acrobatterpillars (that’s a real word. I checked it out) and chomp themselves sick as strawberry-gateu-pillars. I adored this book because of its nascent vibrations that transcended my inner child and stimulated my frontal lobes. Nah; I just loved it because it’s bright and silly and lambs should always wear ladies underwear. Your kids will love it to.

Fancy Dress Christmas

Fancy Dress Christmas is another literary jewel by Nick Sharratt. It’s a ‘Lift the flaps and See‘ book that little kids just love and puts bunnies, budgies, pussy cats, mice and even a stunned looking owl into Christmas fancy dress costumes. The words are in verse with a lovely rhyming scheme that is very reminiscent of Lynley Dodd and the charming Hairy Maclary. Young readers love to listen and repeats rhymes and the author successfully uses this tool to push his story along. The illustrations are very large and bold using bright, primary colours to capture the reader’s attention. Personally, I love a pussy cat with a Doris Day style hairdo so the book works for me on every level.

I Went to the Zoopermarket

Okay, next time you take your sweet, little orange blossoms to the Zoopermarket ( yes, I said Zooper) Nick Sharratt recommends you buy them ‘snazzy sweets’ and ‘funny fizz’. Of course ‘croaker cola’ and some’daft dessert’ must be added to the trolley and you must make sure that they are all SNAPPETIZING!!  Clever word play and cheeky language always reminds me of Roald Dahl at his best. Essentially, I think that’s what I love the most about Nick Sharratt books. They are quirky, eccentric and left field enough to capture most children; just as the incomparable Mr Dahl did. Incomparable but Nick comes mighty close. This story is no exception as it steamrolls along using zippy, bouncing words and takes a reader on a journey through a wild jungle of super market treats and fearsome, animal delights.

Time for a song

I know your mind is stunned by those ten hairy caterpillars and lambs in bras so it’s time for a counting song. This is an oldie but a goodie.

Five Little Speckled Frogs

Five little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log,
Eating some most delicious bugs
Yum, Yum…
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Then there were four green speckled frogs
Glub, Glub,

Four little speckled frogs,
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum Yum…
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool
Then there were three green speckled frogs,
Glub, Glub (Continue until last verse ‘and then there were no green speckled frogs’)

Time for some craft

Time for some craft and a fun counting game.  Just trace your child’s hand or maybe yours if you wish for a bigger outline on white card, and get your hands on some:

  • different coloured crepe paper
  • straws or pop sticks
  • colouring pencils or crayons.

I think a happy hand  is the way to go but let the kids go miserable by all means. An angst driven hand would be intriguing.

A counting hand

I think I have proven that Nick Sharratt is an author that opens up a plethora of choice and joy. I have only reviewed three of his Junior Kindergarten books; but you can bet your ooh-la-la-lambs we have many, many more. We can keep you and the kids counting splatterpillars till the fluffy baa- lambs come home. Say that five times fast. Ha!

Three bonus Nick Sharratt books

Find all these Sharratt induced treasures on the Cockburn Libraries catalogue and let the fun begin.

Your welcome Nick. Your books make me laugh and that is always one of my favourite things in a children’s book. Looking forward to your next one.

  3. Beth

Well, I nominate Shan for the Top Kids Blog Blogger for 2016. Sharrattazam that! My angst driven hand gives your happy hand a High 5. We love Daisy, eat your peas (ahem, I hate peas myself!), plus Nick also does all the best collaborations (I adore just about anything that he works on with Julia Donaldson, what a combination). But who could go past the poems collected in Vikings in the supermarket? Between the Vikings, Farmer Fergal MacFindlay MacFee and Vincent the vampire bat, there’s something for everyone!
