Storytime with Michaela – Rabbits

From sweet, fluffy bunnies to wascally wabbits, a pest to farmers, or common roadkill… rabbits are everywhere! And children’s authors love to create all sorts of interesting characters from this furry animal. My own experience with a pet rabbit is a bit depressing – a little brown bunny called Milo. As with all small pets, I adored him and he died. Mum comforted me and told me I could get another rabbit, a dwarf rabbit even! A couple of weeks later, I told her I was over Milo and was ready for his replacement but she replied that she had only said that to make me feel better… thanks, Mum!

Bunny books

blackrabbitcover

The black rabbit by Philippa Leathers is the story of a rabbit who is scared of the big black rabbit following him everywhere. Who could he be and what does he want?

babbittyscover

Babbity’s big bad mood by M. Christina Butler tells of a bunny who woke up on the wrong side of the burrow. He is feeling very grumpy (like me before my coffee!) and hops around feeling cross until his friends cheer him up. This book has beautiful illustrations and can help kids deal with feeling grouchy.

The rhyming rabbit is a book by one of my favourite children’s authors, Julia Donaldson. I love her work so much, I wrote a BLOG about it 🙂 The Rhyming Rabbit is a little poet, making up rhymes for all his woodland friends but none of them appreciate it. Eventually, he meets a fellow poet and they rhyme the day away…

And of course, there is the famous and very popular Peter Rabbit. Check out Cockburn Libraries collection of books about him and his friends HERE!

A rabbit rhyme

Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose, ah choo!
Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose, ah choo!
Little Peter Rabbit had a fly upon his nose, ah choo!
So he flipped it and he flopped it and it flew away.

Little Peter Rabbit had a very floppy ear, oh dear!
Little Peter Rabbit had a very floppy ear, oh dear!
Little Peter Rabbit had a very floppy ear, oh dear!
So he flipped it and he flopped it ’til it stood up straight.

Little Peter Rabbit had a prickle in his paw, ouch!
Little Peter Rabbit had a prickle in his paw, ouch!
Little Peter Rabbit had a prickle in his paw, ouch!
So he pulled it and he pulled it and it came right out.

MATERIALS:

  • Paint – whatever colour you’d like your rabbit to be
  • Paper plate
  • Pom poms – one big and one small
  • Cardboard – whatever colour you’d like for your rabbit’s ears
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Googly eyes – or you can draw them on
  • Sticky tape
  • Glue

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Paint the back of the paper plate and leave to dry.
  • Fold the plate in half.
  • Cut the pipe cleaner into 3 pieces. Fold these in half and tape the centre inside the fold in the plate. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaner around the plate so they form whiskers.
  • Glue on a small pompom as a nose.
  • From the cardboard, cut two long ears. Glue one on to either side of the plate so they stick above the fold.
  • Glue or draw an eye on each side of the plate.
  • Finish by gluing on a pompom tail. Your rabbit is ready to rock!

Great post Michaela. Condolences for Milo.

That book “The Black Rabbit” looks pretty scary. Is it the bunny rabbit version of Krampus, or something? Is it safe to read at night time?

Also, thanks for posting the Peter Rabbit rhyme, I didn’t know the third verse and now I do!

    Regards, David.
