Storytime with Karen – Up a Tree

One bright kite – that’s enough for me,
I’ll keep it away from the kite-eating tree!

stuck kite

When was the last time your children climbed a tree? With technology-a-plenty at their fingertips, good old fashioned outdoor fun seems to have become a thing of the past. Why not head to your local park, go on a family bushwalk or nature walk, fly a kite, build a tree house, visit Naturescape at Kings Park, do some bird watching, plant a tree or simply spend some time in the backyard? Unstructured outdoor activity for children has benefits for mental health, social and cognitive skills, problem solving, physical fitness, and healthy development. All you need is a tree!

Books To Read

Stuck!

Stuck! by Charlotte Calder

Charlie’s kite gets stuck up a tree. How will Charlie and his friends get the kite down? They try a stick, a boomerang, a frisbee, a rock, a soccer ball and even a broken bat, but the kite remains stuck. And now everything is stuck up the tree. But throughout the pages there is a ginger cat who has his eye on a small bird who is also up the tree. There is also a nosy caterpillar to be spotted on just about every page too. Stuck! was a Notable Book in the CBCA 2010 Awards.

The Magnificent Tree

The Magnificent Tree

Bonny enjoys spending time with her pop. Bonny and Pop have lots of wonderful ideas, for all kinds of things. Both set out to make a tree so that the birds will stay and play and not fly away. A brave tree, a clever tree … a magnificent tree. Bonny takes on a natural and traditional approach to growing a tree, while Pop tinkers with some new ideas. This sweet picture book celebrates creativity, imagination and individuality.

Caps For Sale

Caps For Sale

Caps For Sale, a tale of a peddler and some mischievous monkeys, is a timeless classic. Children will delight in following the peddler’s efforts to outwit the monkeys who have taken his caps. It is a funny story and can be used to teach children about resolving a problem. Caps For Sale has been in print for more than fifty years and the 75th Anniversary Edition goes on sale in mid October 2015. (I have ordered a copy for the Library). Or you could have a go at doing a felt board version of the story.

A Tree Rhyme
Apple Tree
(Act it out!)

Apple Tree

Way up high in the apple tree
5 little apples smiled at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came an apple
Mmmmm, it was good!

Down came an apple
Mmmmm, it was good!

Keep going until there are no apples left!

Craft Idea
Make a decorative kite!

Kite craft

Simply cut a piece of card into a diamond shape. Colour and decorate as desired. You may like to add some straws or popsticks. Tie some ribbon to the base of your kite for the tail. Add some bows to the ribbon. Add some more ribbon to the top of your kite to hang on a door knob or to hold onto.

Did You Know? Children should be encouraged to climb safe trees. Playing outside in a tree gives them direct contact with nature and the tactile experience of touching different barks and leaves. Climbing a tree can build confidence and develop coordination, problem solving skills and strength. (Source: Kidsafe June 2015)

And Remember Reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Happy reading!

PS Have you ever seen something unusual up a tree? I would love to hear about it.

PPS I have just discovered another great book to read for our Up A Tree theme. Check out Rosie’s Hat by Julia Donaldson.

Author: Karen

I completed my tertiary qualification in Library and Information Studies in 1991 and began my career as a Librarian at the Supreme Court Law Library in 1992. Later that same year, I took a position as a Reference Librarian at the Perth Public Library and have been working in public libraries ever since. I have become very interested in the importance of early literacy and the significant relationship between reading for pleasure and the future success of a child.
