Storytime with Karen – Silly

Dr. Seuss is on the loose. He’s hunting for words that are silly and absurd.

To quote Dr. Seuss ‘Fun is good’. And silly stories and rhymes for children can be fun. Which is therefore, good! Silly stories, riddles, rhymes and jokes may suddenly seem hilarious to children as they develop their own sense of humour. To say that most children love jokes would be an understatement. Children like to hear them, tell them and make up their own, often terrible, silly jokes that don’t make any sense! It’s truly joyful seeing and hearing children laugh. So I really enjoy sharing some silly stories with children at Storytime.

Book One

Did you take the B from my _ook? by Beck & Matt Stanton

What happens when the letter ‘B’ goes missing from a book? Well, it becomes an ook of course! I love reading this at Storytime because it really does drive kids crazy! “Nooo!”, they all shout at me. “It’s a butterfly, not an utterfly!” “Nooo!, don’t be silly! It’s a beetle not an eetle!” And that’s okay because it’s the kid’s job to correct me and they love it! With the letter ‘B’ gone missing (blown away by a sneeze) you are going to sound really, really silly. But that’s the point. The children get to be right and it’s the adult or storyteller who is wrong! The mix-ups throughout the book remain constant, making it easy for little ones to follow along. It is fun, interactive, engaging and encourages children to think. So much silliness!

Book Two

What do they do with all the poo from all the animals at the zoo? by Anh Do

Have you ever stopped to think about what happens to all the poo from all the animals at the zoo? Perhaps not? Well Anh Do has, in this funny and silly rhyming story that children love! Perhaps the poo is in our breakfast cereal? Or maybe it’s what gives chocolate ice-cream its brown colour? Have you ever thought about what’s really in your pizza topping? Brown mounds, large and small, are featured throughout the bright and cheery illustrations. While slightly gross it is an amusing and entertaining read-aloud. Do you know the stinky truth? “EWW!”

Book Three

Silly Dizzy Dinosaur! by Jack Tickle

Sometimes Dizzy Dinosaur is a little bit silly. And his silly facial expressions make him so endearing. Dizzy is a somewhat clumsy red Stegosauras who needs our help to dry him off, cure his hiccups, get him down from a tree and fix his sore nose. This is perfect for getting children actively involved in the story by tickling their tummies, shaking themselves dry, shouting out “Boo!”,  and blowing a kiss. The simple text is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. The pictures are bright, bold and cheerful. Interactive and fun!

A Silly Rhyme or Two

Shake Your Sillies Out

Shake, shake, shake your sillies out
Shake, shake, shake your sillies out
Shake, shake, shake your sillies out
And wiggle your waggles away

Clap, clap, clap your crazies out …

Nod, nod, nod your naughties out …

Jump, jump, jump your jiggles out …

Five Little Monsters

This little monster has a big red nose
This little monster has purple toes
This little monster plays all night
This little monster is such a fright
And this little monster goes: “Tee-hee-hee”
“I’m not scary, I’m just silly me.”

(Hold up hand and point to each finger)

Craft Idea

Let’s make a Wonky Donkey stick puppet, inspired by Craig Smith’s classic silly story The Wonky Donkey.

Method: Copy a suitable donkey template or colour-in onto A4 white card. Colour in and cut out. Glue on some joggly/wiggly eyes. Tape a craft stick to the back of the donkey to make a stick puppet. I used a larger sized popstick. Enjoy your wonky donkey. Hee Haw!

Did You Know?

Our libraries have a great selection of silly nonsensical rhyming stories written by Dr. Seuss. Simply search Dr. Seuss in the library catalogue.

Some kid’s jokes

Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Cows go.
Cows go who?
No, silly. Cows go “moo!”

Q. What is a pirate’s favourite letter?
A. Aaarrr!

Q. Why are leopards so bad at playing hide & seek?
A. Because they’re always spotted!

What is your child’s favourite joke? Share in the comments below and let’s spread the laughs!

And Remember: Reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Happy reading!

I completed my tertiary qualification in Library and Information Studies in 1991 and began my career as a Librarian at the Supreme Court Law Library in 1992. Later that same year, I took a position as a Reference Librarian at the Perth Public Library and have been working in public libraries ever since. I have become very interested in the importance of early literacy and the significant relationship between reading for pleasure and the future success of a child.
