Storytime with Karen – Mother’s Day

Wishing all mums a Happy Mother’s Day

A mum has two very important jobs to do.
One is to look after her children.
The other is to do everything else as well!

Mother’s Day honours mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers and mother figures in society. In Australia, it is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May. Flowers, chocolates and cards are popular gifts to symbolise appreciation and gratitude for mums and mother figures on Mother’s Day. And if we consider what mums do, it is not surprising that they have their own special day of recognition. We also dedicate Storytime to mums at this time each year, and thank them for recognising the importance of early literacy.

Just Like My Mummy by David Melling

In this picture book we meet a cute little lion cub who introduces us to his mum. He is quick to point out the similarities between him and his mum. They wake early, but of course mum’s only awake because her son has woken her! They make things together, but of course mum does most of the work! They play games together, but mum prefers dry games to wet games! When lion cub is bored his mummy doesn’t like it. But when he does something she says, “Just sit still for five minutes!” The story is sweet and celebrates the mother/child relationship. The illustrations add humour and fun.

Penguins Love Colors by Sarah Aspinall

A story of six little penguins who love colours and love their mama. And a mama penguin who loves brightly coloured flowers and her little penguins too! The six penguin siblings want to surprise their mama with a special painting. Using bold and bright splashes of colour the little penguins get covered from top to bottom with paint. Luckily Mama loves her surprise, but not as much as she loves her six little penguins, who now need a bath! Their bath is followed by a nap-time snuggle in Mama’s cosy lap! This cheerful and colourful story is perfect for encouraging children to create something special for their mums too.

Does A Kangaroo Have A Mother, Too? by Eric Carle

From baby kangaroos to baby monkeys, every kind of animal has a mother. And their mothers love them – just like your mother loves you! Eric Carle introduces children to twelve different kinds of animals in this picture book, all of whom have a mother – just like me and you. The text is highly repetitive, but this usually appeals to younger children. And while the text is very simple, the artwork is visually engaging. Eric Carle’s trademark use of collage is vibrant, bold, textured and vivid. The mother-child bond of love is evident through the artwork.

The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson

This one is my personal favourite. It is a truly beautiful story and the first time I read it I remember thinking this book is so special, which is why I’ve included it here. However, I don’t normally read it aloud at Storytime because I think it is more appropriate for children older than pre-kindy. If you don’t know this story, I highly recommend it. Exquisite, heartwarming, beautiful, intimate, imaginative, fragile … just like the connection between mothers and daughters.

A Rhyme or Two

(To the tune of B-I-N-G-O)

I love her and she loves me

Ten Little Flowers

One little, two little, three little flowers,
Four little, five little, six little flowers,
Seven little, eight little, nine little flowers,
Ten little flowers for mummy!

(Optional: Countdown from ten flowers to one flower)

Craft Idea

Flowers for mum

Mother's Day

Method: Trace around your hand and wrist onto a piece of skin coloured card. Cut out. Bend the fingers of the card hand as if they were grasping something. Make three flowers using coloured card and craft buttons. You could use a pom pom instead of a button in the centre of each flower. Tape each flower to a green pipecleaner. Arrange and tape the flower stems in the palm of the card hand and position the fingers so that they appear to be holding the flowers. Optional message: ‘If mums were flowers I’d pick you!’

Did You Know?

  • Incredibly, one woman in Russia had 69 children! This included sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. I’m quite sure that this busy mum had no concept of the phrase ‘me time!’
  • The most common month for mothers to give birth to their children is August.
  • Australians spend around $1.36 billion on Mother’s Day. That’s a lot of gratitude!

And Remember: Reading is an essential skill for success in life. And reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Please find the time to read to your babies, toddlers and children. Happy reading!
