This week’s storytime theme is MiceThose furry little creatures that squeak and are unwelcome in our kitchens! Many children’s books feature mice. And in many of them, mice are the main characters. From Angelina Ballerina to Maisy to Stuart Little, mice resonate with children because of their small size, natural curiosity and cuteness. Other well known mice include Geronimo Stilton, Jerry (think Tom and Jerry), Speedy Gonzales, Minnie Mouse and perhaps the most famous mouse of all, Mickey Mouse!

Books to Read

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear

The little mouse

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear  has become a classic children’s book and is included in the top ten books that feature mice. The story explores the dilemma of a small mouse who wants to eat a freshly picked red, ripe strawberry but is afraid of the big, hungry bear who might try to take it from him. How will the little mouse stop the bear from eating his red, ripe strawberry? It is the suspense created in the story, along with the accompanying vivid illustrations, that make this picture book so appealing. First published in 1984, this popular book has been kept in print for years.

A Cat is Chasing Me Through This Book!

A cat is chasing me through this book!

A Cat is Chasing Me Through This Book!  is a fun, interactive read-aloud featuring well known cat and mouse rivals, Tom and Jerry. Cute little Jerry requests the help of the reader to assist him in getting away from mean old Tom. The action is fast paced, the illustrations are bold and children will enjoy aiding Jerry in outsmarting Tom.

Little Nelly’s Big Book (Of Knowledge)

Little Nelly's Big Book

Little Nelly is a baby elephant who thinks she’s a mouse because of what she read in a book. So Little Nelly joins a family of mice who welcome her, despite her being a rather large mouse. It is a funny story about mistaken identities, friendship and the importance of having pictures in books!

A Mouse Rhyme

5 baby miceFive Baby Mice
Where are the baby mice? Squeak, squeak, squeak!
(Hide your hand behind your back)
I cannot see them! Peek, peek, peek.
(Shade eyes with hand, as if looking for the mice)
Here they come from the hole in the wall,
(Bring out a clenched fist from behind your back)
One, two, three, four, five and that is all!
(Open your fingers one at a time)

A Mouse Craft

Make an alphabet mouse.

Draw a bold letter “M” onto a piece of grey card and cut out. Then using some pink card make some mouse ears and glue them to the top of the letter “M” (as pictured). Make some whiskers using black card and glue them into place. Glue a pink pom pom over the top of the whiskers for the mouse’s nose. (Alternatively you could use more of the pink card cut into a circle for the mouse’s nose). Glue on some googly eyes, or draw the eyes onto the “M”. Then use either a pipe cleaner or piece of wool for the mouse’s tail by taping to the back of your letter “M”.

Did You Know?   Maisy is a loveable mouse with a nose for adventure. She was created by Lucy Cousins. Her favourite toy is a Panda bear. Maisy likes to make friends, “read” books and play in the garden.

And Remember:  Reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Happy reading!

PS:  Let me know about your favourite book that has a mouse in it.

I completed my tertiary qualification in Library and Information Studies in 1991 and began my career as a Librarian at the Supreme Court Law Library in 1992. Later that same year, I took a position as a Reference Librarian at the Perth Public Library and have been working in public libraries ever since. I have become very interested in the importance of early literacy and the significant relationship between reading for pleasure and the future success of a child.
