Storytime with Karen – Hats

Oh, the magic hat, the magic hat!
It moved like this, it moved like that!

Magician's hat

Hats, hats, hats – they all have a job to do. This week’s Storytime theme is all about hats! I started this session by showing the children a variety of different hats. These included a hard hat, bike helmet, cap, beanie, sun hat, bowler hat, magician’s hat, and the Cat in the Hat’s hat! This led into our discussion about “Why do people wear hats?” We talked about hats for sun protection, safety, warmth, fashion, and fun. Next we played a game of “Whose hat is that?” These hats were pictured on the Storytime whiteboard and belonged to pirates, princesses, wizards and more (see picture below).

The Magic Hat by Mem FoxThe Magic Hat

When a magic hat arrives in town you can expect the unexpected. Suddenly people are turning into an animal if the magic hat should land on their head. From a toad to a giraffe, with a baboon, a bear and a kangaroo in between. Elements of fantasy and magic make this an entertaining story. I enjoy the rollicking and rhyming text which is fun to read-aloud. It also gives the children an opportunity to guess what animal the magic hat will turn someone into next.

This Is Not My Hat by Jon KlassenThis Is Not My Hat

A small fish has stolen a blue bowler hat from a very large sleeping fish. That is very naughty indeed! Though the small fish assures us that the big fish will not wake up, will not follow him, and will not know which way he went, the illustrations tell a different story. I like the visual humour  and the sneaky little crab in this story.

I Got This Hat by Jol and Kate TempleI Got This Hat

Hats from here and hats from there, so many different hats to wear. A small boy shows us through his collection of hats. For starters, he has a hat from China and a hat from a miner. Then there’s the one from a deep-sea diver and another from a racing car driver. But which hat to wear to bed? The storyline is very simple and together with the illustrations cleverly introduces young children to a wide variety of headgear.

You can find more picture books about hats here.

Did You Know? I Got This Hat was the book selected for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) in 2016. NSS is an annual event that is in its sixteenth year. It’s aim is to promote the value of reading and literacy and to encourage young children to enjoy books.

A Hat Rhyme
Do you put your hat on …

Karen's pink hat

Do you put your hat on your foot, on your foot?
Your hat on your foot uh uh uh uh!

Do you put your hat on your elbow, on your elbow?
Your hat on your elbow uh uh uh uh!

Do you put your hat on your knee, on your knee?
Your hat on your knee uh uh uh uh!

You put your hat on, you put your hat on, you put your hat on
your head, head, head.

You put your hat on, you put your hat on, you put your hat on
your head, head, heady, head.

A Hat Craft
Ahoy me hearties, lets make a pirate hat!
Hat pirate

Because we did our hats Storytime to celebrate NSS, we made the pirate’s hat that features in I Got This Hat.

You will need:

  • White card
  • Hat elastic
  • Coloured feathers
  • Sticker dots
  • Crayons
  • One hole punch

Simply print the template onto the white card. Colour in and cut out the pirate hat. Using a one hole punch put a hole at each end of the hat and thread the hat elastic through and secure in place. Add some black sticker dots to the front and tape some coloured feathers to the back. Your pirate hat is now ready to wear. Aaaargh!

And Remember: Reading for pleasure is the most important indicator of the future success of a child. Happy reading!

PS If you have a favourite book or rhyme about hats, I would love to hear about it.
