Storytime with Jessica – Heroes and Villains

It’s almost summer which means it’s time for the Summer Reading Club!

This year’s Summer Reading Club is kicking off on Thursday. It runs December 1 to January 31 and the theme this year is…Heroes and Villains. So, here at Success we are starting with a massive Heroes and Villains themed Storytime this morning (Tuesday 29 November) and Friday 2 December at 9:30am. Come along and hear some of the books and rhymes below and sign up to the SRC for fun and activities while Storytime takes a break from Wednesday 14 December.

The Day I Lost My Superpowers by Michael Escoffier

This book is a delightful read for children and adults with lots of picture based humour. Our main character believes they have superpowers like becoming invisible and communicating with plants (animals were too hard) but we see through the pictures what they are actually doing and children will find that quite funny. This is a great book for discussing visual literacy and looking at the difference between the words on the page and what the pictures are showing us have actually happened. It ends quite beautifully talking about the ‘superpowers’ that parents have to make small children feel better (and like they have superpowers).

Super Hair-o and the Barber of Doom by John Rocco

This is about a child named Rocco who gets all of his superpowers from his amazing hair…until one day he is captured and it is all cut off – cutting him off from his powers as well. But, as it turns out when there is trouble they are able to save the day still. This is another book with some excellent visual literacy included – the pictures are inspired in places by comic books and the audience knows who the villain (barber), the capturing adult (dad), and who sets up the big rescue at the end (a random girl who is passing) and through that we can talk about the other layer in this book between what the protagonist knows and what we can see because we are the reader. Which is just a fancy way of talking about us knowing more than the main character.

Police Officers on Patrol by Kersten Hamilton

“When people need help we rock and roll.” is the motto for this squad of police officers. Dealing with traffic accidents, lost children, and robbers this book has a great rhythm and uses repetition well as it talks about how police officers are there to help in lots of situations. Any list of Hero and Villain books wouldn’t be complete without one with real-life heroes – police, fire fighters, and all emergency services professions.

Five Naughty Villains

Five naughty villains, jumping on the bed.
One fell off and bumped her head.

The hero called the doctor, and the doctor said…
“No more villains jumping on the bed.”

Four naughty villains…
Three naughty villains…
Two naughty villains…

One naughty villain, jumping on the bed.
He fell off and bumped his head.

The hero called the villain, and then they said…
“No more villains jumping on the bed.”

The Summer Reading Club

Cockburn Libraries wants to encourage a love of reading year round – so get involved in this amazing club delivered both in libraries and online. The Summer Reading Club has special areas for pre-schoolers (all you wonderful Storytimers), primary aged children, and high schoolers so there is something for everyone during the summer holidays. Special activity packs are available for download from the website to help children engage with their reading using multi-literacy development.
Visit The Summer Reading Club to sign up and keep an eye on our blog for more activities to alleviate the boredom during the holidays.

And remember…
Borrow ten junior books from your local Cockburn library during December and January and ask at the front desk for a prize. Because everyday of reading, every book read, and every minute spent enriching children’s lives with talking, singing, reading, and playing makes a difference for children.
